Easties’ Golf Grabs First Win; Softball One Win Shy of Postseason Bid

Golf

The East Haven golf team picked up its first victory of the season after splitting its tri-match with Foran and Wilbur Cross at Alling Memorial Golf Club on April 27. The Yellowjackets were edged by Foran 192-195, but topped Cross 195-197.

In terms of East Haven’s scorers, Joe Aloi shot a 46, Matt Latella scored a 46, Josh Palmer had a score of 50, and Mike Moscato returned to the clubhouse with a scorecard of 53. East Haven is now 1-5.

Softball

The Yellowjackets’ softball squad won one of its three games last week to move within a victory of clinching its spot in the SCC and State tournaments. Overall, the Easties have a record of 7-5 with a mark of 3-1 in SCC Quinnipiac action.

On April 24, East Haven’s week started with a 9-4 victory over Lauralton Hall. Taylor Myers threw a complete game in which she scattered four runs to earn the victory on the hill. Jess Stettinger had two hits, including a home run, with two RBI, while Brianna Carrano and Myers both had two hits. Julia SanGiovanni clubbed a triple in the win.

After defeating Lauralton Hall, East Haven took defeats against Hand and Amity on April 28 and 29, respectively. The Yellowjackets lost to divisional opponent Hand, 6-2, and then lost by a 17-0 final versus Amity.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

East Haven traveled to North Haven for a dual-meet against North Haven and West Haven last week. The Yellowjackets split the meet behind a 117.5-32.5 loss to North Haven and a 75-32 victory over West Haven.

In the meet, the two individual event wins for the Easties came in the 100-meter dash and the shot put. In the 100, Jordan Ingram won with a time of 11.0 seconds. In the shot, Niam Coward earned the victory with a toss of 43 feet-11 inches. The Yellowjackets’ 4x100 relay team of Mike Castellano, Ingram, Dom Manna, and McClay Marshall was victorious with a time of 45.7 as East Haven improved its record to 2-6 this season.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Yellowjackets played host to North Haven and West Haven last week, splitting the meet with a 90-51 victory over West Haven and a 114-36 loss to North Haven. The split moved East Haven to 2-6 this year.

In individual events, East Haven saw three winners as Sydney Marquardt won the pole vault with a height of 7 feet-6 inches, Molly Mazzucco won the high jump with a leap of 4-10, and Haley Montesanto won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 53.2 seconds. The 4x400 relay of Montesanto, Isabella Ragaini, Paige Maffeo, and Katie Maffeo grabbed first place at 4:33.4.

Boys’ Tennis

The Yellowjackets won their second match of the season last week to move to 2-7 for the season.

In the Easties’ first match of the week, they took a 7-0 loss to Amity on April 27. Tony Cofrancesco, Spencer Goldberg, Brendan So, and Nick Vessicchio competed in the singles matches for East Haven. In doubles, the teams of Jake Zito and Rob Scalese, Seth Proto and Dough Comesanas, and Christian Ramirez and Nick Kluth took the court for the Yellowjackets.

The next day, East Haven defeated Sheehan by a 4-3 final at home. Cofrancesco claimed a 6-1, 6-1 win in singles for the Easties, who swept the three doubles matches to get the victory. Scalese and Zito won 6-1, 6-0; Proto and Comesanas won 6-0, 6-1; and Kluth and Anthony Petolla prevailed 6-4, 6-3.

To finish the week, East Haven dropped a 5-2 decision against Cheshire on April 29.

Girls’ Tennis

The Easties’ took a pair of defeats last week and are now 4-4 this year.

On April 24, East Haven lost 7-0 against Cheshire. Devyn Gargano, Karla Gonzalez, Juliana Mikulski, and Sandy Nguyen were the Yellowjackets’ singles players in the match. The pairings of Autumn Hernandez and Mikayla Raffone, Nhi Trinh and Victoria Gaudino, plus Emma Luden and Jane Roberts represented East Haven on the doubles court.

East Haven closed out the week with a 7-0 loss at Sacred Heart Academy on April 28.
