Several Guilford Squads Stand on the Verge of States

Softball

The Indians’ softball squad picked up two wins in as many contests last week to improve to 6-2 overall with a record of 1-2 in SCC Hammonasset Division play. Guilford is two wins away from clinching a spot in states this year.

Guilford notched a 7-5 victory over Law to begin its week on April 24. Emily Torre (3-for-3, 5 RBI) hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first to tie the game and later gave Guilford the lead for good with a solo shot in the third. Charlotte Young was also 3-for-3, plus Jordyn Goldtsein and winning pitcher Amanda King each went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The Indians then pounded out 15 hits to defeat Shelton 13-1 on April 27. King led the attack by going 3-for-3 with a triple, two RBI, and four runs scored. Torre (2-for-2, 3 RBI), Goldstein (2-for-4, 3 RBI), and Sara Barreira (2-for-5, RBI) all had two hits for Guilford. King notched another win by striking out five and allowing only two hits.

Baseball

Guilford lost two of three last week to move to 7-4 with a mark of 2-1 in the SCC Oronoque Division. The Indians need one more victory to qualify for State Tournament.

The Indians began the week with a bang by recording an 11-2 win over Foran on April 24. John Luke Cianciolo was 3-for-4 with three RBI, Logan Hitchcock hit 2-for-3 and had three RBI, and Sean Kellaher was 4-for-5. Noah Rubino turned in a six-inning, one-hit, eight-strikeout outing on the mound.

Guilford then lost a 7-1 contest to Branford on April 28.

The Indians went on to take a 4-3 loss to Hand on April 29. Sean Kellaher hit a two-out, two-RBI single to give Guilford a 2-0 lead. Eddie Sweeney’s three-run home run in the seventh gave Hand the lead for good.

Boys’ Tennis

The Indians had a superb week with three wins in as many matches, moving to 9-1 on the year. Guilford will qualify for the State Championship with one more victory.

The Indians began the week with a 7-0 sweep of Sheehan on April 26, marking Guilford’s sixth straight 7-0 decision. Guilford then beat Notre Dame-West Haven 5-2 on April 27 and Waterford 7-0 on April 28.

Girls’ Tennis

The Indians took three of their four contests last week to improve to 6-3 on the year. With three more wins, the Indians will qualify for the State Tournament.

Guilford first defeated Shelton 5-2 on April 24. Grabbing wins were Claire Dinauer (6-0, 6-0) and Faren Roth (6-0, 6-0), plus the doubles teams of Charlotte and Molly Babbin (6-0, 6-1), Sam Stofflet and Emily Dietzko (6-0, 6-0), and Elaina Griffiths and Annabelle Wang (6-0, 6-0).

The Indians were then edged 4-3 by Hand on April 26. Dinauer (7-5, 6-4), Roth (6-3, 6-4), plus Stofflet and Dietzko (3-6, 6-4, 6-3) were all victorious.

Guilford bounced back on April 27 with a 6-1 win over Sheehan. Roth (6-2, 6-0), Acadia Hall (6-1, 6-1), Emma Rand (6-1, 6-1), along with the tandems of the Babbin sisters (6-2, 6-0), Stofflet and Dietzko (6-0, 6-2), and Griffiths and Wang (6-1, 6-0) collected wins for the Indians.

The Indians closed the week with a 5-2 win over Waterford on April 29. Dinauer (6-1, 6-7, 6-3), and Roth (6-1, 6-1), plus the Babbin sisters (6-2, 4-6, 6-2), Stofflet and Dietzko (6-3, 6-2), and Griffiths and Wang (6-2, 6-2) secured victories.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Indians are red hot and won all three of their games last week. Guilford has now won five consecutive contests and is 6-4 overall. The Indians are one victory away from a State Tournament berth.

Guilford began the week with a 9-6 final over Amity on April 25. The Indians made it four straight with an 11-10 win over McMahon on April 27. Guilford earned its fifth straight victory with a 10-8 triumph against Simsbury on April 29.

Golf

The Indians split a pair of decisions with Shelton and Amity to run their mark to 1-4.

Guilford nabbed its first victory of 2017 with a 179-185 triumph over Shelton on April 24. The Indians then took a 156-188 loss to Amity on April 27.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Indians took two of three in a recent quad-meet against Career (prevailing 86-38), Amistad (winning 99-25), and Cross (losing 86-55) to move their dual-meet mark to 5-3-1.

Meredith Bloss won both the 1,600 (5:41) and the 3,200 (12:23); Chloe Shaw won the 400 in 61.8; Jacqui Guerra took the 800 in 2:22; Mallory Peters was second in the discus (98-0); Peggy Wagner was runner-up in the triple jump (29-0); Elissa Strand finished second in the 800 (2:26); Sofia Migani was second in the high jump (4-6); Clara Wiesler came in second in the 1,600 (5:58); and Ellie Wiesler was second in the 3,200 (12:24) for the Indians.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

In a quad-meet on April 27, Guilford won against Career (113-22) and Amistad (118-21), while losing to Cross (79-66).

The Indians’ individual winners included Connor Rose in the discus (85-7) and shot put (38-1), Caleb Benedict in the 110 hurdles (20.8), Jordan Lembo-Frey in the 100 (11.4), and Finn Davidson in the 1,600 (4:49.6). Also, Corey Gambardella won the 800 (2:04.3) and Finn Davidson finished second (2:05.8), with both athletes qualifying for the State Championship meet by virtue of their performances. Corey Sondak finished second in the 200 and qualified for states with a time of 23.9 seconds. Other second-place finishers included Juan Colberg-Martinez in the javelin (89-8), James Petritz in the shot put (33-6.75), Brennan Kaisen in the 3,200 (10:59.30), Tom Larkin-Wells in the triple jump (38-5), and Ryan Costanzo in the high jump (5-4).

The Indians later traveled to Philadelphia for the Penn Relays on April 29. The 4x400-meter relay team of Sam Sessions, Benedict, Lembo-Frey, and Gambardella posted its fastest time of the year with a 3:28.77 and qualified for states in the process.
