North Haven Baseball, Softball, Boys’ Lacrosse Make State Tourney

Baseball

The North Haven baseball team claimed victory in two of its three recent matchups to improve to 8-3 and earn a spot in the Class L State Tournament. The Indians posted a 9-4 home win over Shelton on April 23, prevailed 4-2 against Xavier at Palmer Field on April 27, and took at 4-3 home against Cheshire on April 29.

Luca Lawrence gave up four runs in the first inning, just one of which was earned, when the Indians hosted Shelton. The Gaels maintained their 4-0 lead until the bottom of the fifth, when North Haven plated five runs. The Indians added four more in the sixth to go on to the 9-4 victory. Lawrence tossed five innings in which he allowed five hits and walked none to pick up his first win. Brendan Clark fanned four through two scoreless frames to put a bow on the victory.

At the plate, Peyton Farina went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, a RBI, and a stolen base. Chris Stevens was 3-for-4 with two runs and a pair of RBI. Clark doubled, walked, scored twice, and drove home two. Steve Erbe had a single with two RBI, while Craig Somma doubled and scored a run.

In the Xavier game, North Haven scored three times in the first inning, the Falcons cut it to 3-2, but the Indians tacked on an insurance run in the seventh to get the 4-2 victory. Preston Young allowed one unearned run in 3.1 innings, after which Clark gave up a run through 3.2 for his fourth win. Clark also went 2-for-3 with a run and a RBI, while Solomon hit a single, drew a walk, scored a run, drove in a run, and stole a base.

The Indians saw their seven-game win streak snapped with a 4-3 loss to Cheshire. The Rams went up 3-0 in the second, North Haven tied it in the sixth, and then Cheshire score the winning run in the top of the seventh. Lawrence allowed just the one run in 5.1 innings of relief work. Erbe had two hits and scored a run, and Dominic Onofrio had a hit, scored a run, and drove in a run for North Haven.

Softball

North Haven picked up three victories in last week’s action to run its record to 8-1 and qualify for the Class L State Tournament. The Indians posted an 8-4 win at Lyman Hall on April 24, won 9-6 in a home game versus Law the following afternoon, and beat Wilbur Cross 18-0 at home on April 28.

In the Lyman Hall win, the Indians led 5-4 before tacking on three insurance runs in the sixth for the 8-4 victory. Olivia Peterson went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, Caitlin Ranciato was 2-for-4 with three RBI, Haylee Garthwait went 3-for-4, and Caroline Gabrielle hit a double. Lauren Card pitched a complete game in which she scattered six hits and walked one.

After defeating Lyman Hall, North Haven scored four runs in the third inning and three in fifth on their way to a 9-6 win over Law. Peterson went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, and Ranciato was 3-for-3 with two runs and a RBI. Ariana Delvecchio and Anna Stowe added doubles for the Indians, who saw Card earned her seventh win.

In the Cross victory, North Haven plated nine runs in the first inning, seven more in the second, and cruised to the 18-0 shutout. Eryn Sheeley pitched a three-hitter with just one walk and nine strikeouts for her first win and helped her cause by hitting a pair of doubles. Gigi Russo, Sarah Lombardi (double), and Carly VanDeusen all went 2-for-3.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Indians recorded three victories last week and now stand with a record of 8-1. On April 24, North Haven notched a big 13-11 victory on the home turf of SCC rival Guilford. The Indians were back on the road to face Hamden on April 26 and prevailed 17-4. The next day, Head Coach Eric Bailey’s club tangled with non-conference foe Southington and pulled off a 6-5 victory. North Haven has qualified for the Class M State Tournament.

The Guilford game was nip and tuck the whole way, but North Haven outscored the host Indians 8-6 in the middle two periods, and that proved the difference. Pete Saracino scored four goals, while Zack Orth scored three to go with an assist. Bowen Brennan had two goals with a pair of assists, Korbin Pecora scored twice and added an assist, and Tom Dodge dished off three assists. Max Sullivan and Matt Crisco also scored goals for the Indians, who received 10 saves from Dustin Byrnes in net.

After blowing out Hamden, the Indians hosted Southington and won 6-5. The Indians led 3-2 at halftime, were up 6-4 heading into the final period, and held on for the win. Saracino had two goals and two assists, Orth scored a pair of goals, Brennan and Dodge both had a goal with an assist, and Pecora added an assist. Byrnes swatted aside 11 offerings in net.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Indians recorded a sweep of a tri-meet in East Haven and are now 8-1 overall with a mark of 3-0 in the Oronoque Division. North Haven was victorious against Oronoque foe East Haven (114-36) and West Haven (140-9) on April 27. The Indians have wrapped up at least a share of their division crown and can win it with a win over Career next week.

Erica Marroitt prevailed in a trio of events by winning the long jump (17-1), the triple jump (32-5.5), and the 100 (12.5). Sarah Vanacore took first in the shot put (34-3.5) and the discus (100-0), while Elise Symon was first for the 800 (2:35.9) and the 1,600 (5:50.40). Also capturing first place were Adra Chbihi in the 100 hurdles (18.4), Kyla Delvecchio in the javelin (92-5), Ashley Brown for the 400 (63.8), Sammy Curcio in the 200 (27.9), and Clare Connell in the 3,200 (14:02). North Haven’s 4x800 relay of Curcio, Julia Mappa, Camille Sahirul and Brown took first at 52.8, plus the 4x800 of Macey DiCarlo, Maily Tran, Shannon Reilly, Elya Paolillo ran a time of 11:43.8 to claim first.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

North Haven improved to 6-3 overall and 3-0 in the Oronoque Division by posting a recent tri-meet sweep. The Indians defeated division rival East Haven (117.5-32.5) and West Haven (113-37) at Vanacore Field on April 27. North Haven has clinched at least a share of the Oronoque title and can take it outright by beating Career next week.

Omar Gebril took first place in three events by winning the 200 (22.5), the long jump (20-0), and the javelin (142-10.75). Josh Bryson claimed victory in the 110 high hurdles (15.90) and the high jump at 5-3. Jordan Tong paced his way to first place in both the 800 (2:15.8) and the 1,600 (5:09.4). Kyle Maruca won the discus (129-0), Eric Spignesi finished first in the pole vault (9-0), and Chris Moran prevailed in the triple jump (37-8.25). North Haven also received a victory from its 4x400 relay of Jack Opramolla, Tong, Corey Reilly, and Bryson, who ran a 3:48.7.

Girls’ Tennis

North Haven won two of its three matches last week to improve to 9-1. The Indians posted a 7-0 shutout at Lyman Hall on April 24 and then blanked Career 7-0 at home two days later. Then on April 27, North Haven took its first loss by dropping a 6-1 decision at Hand.

In the Lyman Hall win, Julia Migliorini, Olivia Hoyt, and Hillary Hoyt recorded 6-0, 6-0, victories at the top three singles positions. Lily Mezzi stepped into the lineup to play No. 4 and earned her first varsity win with a 6-2, 6-2 score. North Haven’s duos of Nina Padro and Amber Jean-Guillaume (6-0, 6-1), Sejal Atluru and Zoe Bowerman (6-1, 6-0), plus Avery Hill and Katrina Nadolny (6-2, 6-1) were victorious in their doubles matches.

Against Career, both Migliorini and the Hoyt sisters were 6-0, 6-0 winners, as was Rachel Petry at No. 4 singles. On the doubles court, the teams of Padro and Jean-Guillaume, Atluru and Bowerman, and Hill and Nadolny all prevailed by 6-0, 6-0 scores.

In the Hand loss, Migliorini posted a 6-2, 6-1 win in the No. 1 singles match. Padro and Jean-Guillaume won the first set of their No. 1 doubles duel before losing a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 decision.

Boys’ Tennis

North Haven dropped a pair of recent contests to move to 3-5 for the year. The Indians took a 7-0 home loss versus Fairfield Prep on April 24 and then lost 7-0 at Hand on April 26.

Golf

The Indians took a 173-185 home loss to Sheehan at Wallingford Country Club on April 24. Three days later, the Indians played at Trumbull and lost 154-189 to move to 2-3.

In its loss to Sheehan, North Haven was led by Alex Kirtland with a 43 and Matt Mezzano with his round of 44. Steve Pugliese scored a 47, while Kam DeMartin rounded out the scoring with a 51. Noah Garrison shot a 61.
