Valley Softball Levels Record at 4-4; Boys’ Lacrosse Keeps Winning

Softball

The Warriors’ softball squad rattled off three victories in its last four contests, including a thrilling comeback against Career, to even its record at 4-4 on the season.

On April 15, Valley swept a doubleheader against non-conference opponent Career at home, winning the first game 10-9 and taking the nightcap 12-1. In the opener, the Warriors’ trailed Career 9-4 heading into bottom of the seventh inning for the, but rallied for six runs to get the walk-off victory, and leave the Panthers on the field. Addy Bullis laced an opposite-field RBI single to win it for Valley Regional. Junior Rylee DaRe went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored, plus sophomore Abby Cunningham was 3-for-4 with two doubles, threes runs, and three RBI for Valley. Freshman Riley Millburne was 3-for-4 with a couple of doubles, a run scored, and three RBI.

In the second game, Valley’s offense stayed hot by scoring four runs in the first inning as the Warriors cruised to the 12-1 victory. Cunningham was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI, sophomore Olivia Kollmer went 3-for-5 with two doubles and a run scored, and Bullis was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI. Bullis was also the winning pitcher in both games as she struck out 17 batters the doubleheader.

On April 17, the Warriors were at home against East Hampton and lost 4-1. East Hampton nursed a one-run lead until the top of the fifth, when it put three runs on the board. Bullis went 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI and pitched another complete game, striking out nine. Cunningham was 2-for-2 with a walk.

Two days later, Valley hosted Old Lyme and defeated the Wildcats handily by a score of 14-4. The game remained close with a 1-1 tie after three innings, but Valley’s offense caught fire in the bottom of the fourth with eight runs on 12 hits to put the game out of reach. Bullis collected her fourth win on the mound and helped her own cause by going 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and a RBI. DaRe went 2-for-4 with a double, as well, and scored two runs while driving in three for the Warriors. Freshman Carlee Kirla went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI.

Baseball

The Valley Regional baseball team played three contests last week and took two losses to move to 3-6 on the season.

In their first game of the week on April 17, the Warriors lost at home against Haddam-Killingworth by a score of 11-8. On April 19, Valley traveled to Old Lyme and defeated the Wildcats 5-2. For their final game of the week, the Warriors lost by a 8-2 score at home against East Hampton.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Valley played three games last week and won two contests to stand at 5-1 on the season.

In their first match, the Warriors faced off against Shoreline Conference foe Old Saybrook and won 12-5 on April 18. Senior captain Jonathan Brophy scored three goals and added an assist, sophomore Sean Cole scored two goals and assisted on five others, freshman Davis Burleson added three goals, and senior captain Ryan Davis added three assists and won nine of his 12 face-offs.

Two days later, Valley hosted Waterford and lost 12-5. Brophy had two goals for the Warriors, while Cole added three assists.

On April 22, the Warriors were home to play against Fitch, which they beat by a score of 19-11. Leading 8-6 at the half, the Warriors scored seven goals in the third period on their way to the win. Cole scored two goals on two shots and assisted on seven goals, while senior Rocky Harpin scored five goals and added three assists for Valley. Burleson had four goals and three assists. Ryan Davis scored two goals and had two assists, while going 20-of-26 in the face-off circle.

Girls’ Lacrosse

Valley had a Shoreline Conference matchup at Old Saybrook last week and took a 23-8 defeat. The Warriors are now 0-2 on the year.

Girls’ Tennis

The Warriors played two matches last week, winning one of them for a 3-3 mark on the season.

Valley’s first match was at Morgan, where the Warriors triumphed 5-2 on April 17. In singles play, junior Emma Hunt earned a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2; freshman Myah Martinez was victorious, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3; and junior Isabelle Bowden grabbed a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 4 spot. In doubles, sophomore Allie Champion and junior Isabelle Hansen took the 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2; and sophomore Tori Adamczyk and junior Saffron Reilly won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3.

On April 19, the Warriors matched up against Coginchaug in Durham and lost 4-1.

Golf

The Warriors played three Shoreline Conference matchups to begin their season last week, claiming one win for an early mark of 1-2.

Valley’s first match was at home at Fox Hopyard Country Club against Haddam-Killingworth on April 17. H-K defeated the Warriors 190-206. In its second match of the week, Valley was back home and defeated Hale-Ray 213-227. For their final contest, the Warriors played at Old Saybrook’s Fenwick Golf Course and lost to the Rams 163-180.
