T-Birds’ Softball, Boys’ Lacrosse Pick Up a Couple of Victories

Softball

The North Branford team won two of its three most recent games to improve to 6-1 for the year.

On April 15, North Branford took a 7-6 loss to East Haven, which scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Sydney Senerchia had three hits, including a home run, with three RBI. Katy Pederson had two hits, one of which was a homer, to go with two RBI. Olivia Hemstock finished with a pair of RBI for North Branford. Julia Haeckel pitched six innings and allowed five runs (4 earned) on six hits with 10 strikeouts. Senerchia came on in relief and recorded a pair of strikeouts before allowing the run in the seventh inning.

Two days later, North Branford crushed Shoreline Conference foe Coginchaug, 16-1. The T-Birds’ scored 11 runs in the fourth inning of the rout. Hemstock had multiple hits, while Emily Muzyka, Brianna Raccio, Hemstock, Pederson, and Jazzmine Gargano all had two RBI. Angelina Ramada drove home the T-Birds’ other run. Senerchia pitched a four-hitter and fanned four to get her first victory of the season.

The Thunderbirds’ bats were hot once again when they cruised to a 22-0 victory over Portland on April 19. Pederson had three hits and also drove home three runs, while Raccio had two hits with four RBI. The big swing came off the bat of Sam DeAngelo, who crushed a grand slam. North Branford sent Kaylee Velez to the mound for her first appearance of the season and she tossed a two-hitter with seven strikeouts.

Baseball

The Thunderbirds took a 4-3 loss against Portland on April 19 to drop to 2-5.

Mike Hoyt gave up three runs in the first inning and took the loss for North Branford, which scored a run in the bottom of the seventh, but left the tying run on base. Gio Tirollo and Nick Mancini had two hits apiece for the T-Birds.

Boys’ Lacrosse

North Branford got back on the right track by winning two of its three recent contests to improve to 3-5.

On April 15, the T-Birds lost to Branford 17-4. Sean McKee, Dylan Martinik, Connor Odell, and Aiden Ferrucci scored one goal apiece, while Noah Taylor and Xavier Cognata combined to make 18 saves in goal.

North Branford rebounded with wins over Shoreline Conference opponents Cromwell and Old Lyme. On April 18, North Branford defeated Cromwell 15-6 by jumping out to a 12-1 lead at the half. Brian McKee and Dillon Blake scored four goals each, Odell added three, Peter Ablondi-Taylor scored two, plus Martinik and Nick Barrett both had one. Blake led the team with three assists. Taylor and Cognata combined for 14 saves. The T-Birds went 15 of 23 on face-offs in the win.

On April 20, North Branford toppled Old Lyme 13-10. Brian McKee and Odell scored five goals apiece, Blake scored twice, and Martinik added a goal. It was fluid offensive effort for the T-Birds as 11 of their 13 goals were assisted. Cognata made 15 saves in net.

Girls’ Tennis

The T-Birds lost both their matches last week and have a record of 2-4 on the season.

On April 17, Westbrook defeated North Branford 5-2. North Branford’s wins came at the No. 3 and No. 4 singles positions as Zelda Galdenzi won 6-0, 6-0 and Nicole Yeager prevailed 6-4, 6-4.

To close out last week, Old Saybrook defeated the T-Birds 7-0 on April 19.

Boys’ Tennis

North Branford took a 6-1 loss to Old Saybrook on April 19. The T-Birds are now 0-3 this year.

Golf

North Branford started its season with defeats against Morgan, Old Saybrook, and Coginchaug last week.

On April 18, Morgan defeated North Branford 210-229. Golfers for the T-Birds included John Lovelace (49), Drew Sommo (57), Jake Neubig (59), and Christian DeFrancesco (64).

The next day, Old Saybrook beat North Branford 164-228. Neubig scored a 52, Somma had a 57, Zach Smola shot a 59, and DeFrancesco scored a 60.

On April 20, North Branford took a 171-216 loss to Coginchaug. Neubig finished with a 45 and was followed by Lovelace (51), Smola (59), and Sommo (61).

Boys’ Outdoor Track

North Branford traveled to Old Lyme to take on Creed and the host Wildcats on April 3.

Placing first for the T-Birds were Michael Madoule in the 400 (54.83), Austin Gibilisco in the 300 hurdles (50.51), Jacob Marshall in the javelin (100-3), Sydney Franklin in the triple jump (35-0), and Michael Rabuffo in the high jump (5-8).

Other points were scored by Marshall in the 200 (24.19) and 100 (11.71); Tyler Capasso in the 200 (28.8); Freddie Little in the 300 (57.97); Hunter Boni in the 300 (1:00); Jared Jamieson in the 3,200 (12:18) and javelin (92-10); Franklin in the long jump (17-10) and high jump (5-2); Zach Jamieson in the 800 (2:29.2); Parker Nadeau in the 1,600 (5:45.00); Nick Ash in the shot put (29-11) and discus (63-3); plus Jack Curran in the shot put (29-2) and javelin (79-7).
