Morgan Baseball Still On Fire at 10-0; Golf Squads Get Their Seasons Off the Ground

Baseball

The Morgan baseball team was victorious in four recent games to improve its record to 10-0 on the season.

In their first game, the Huskies won at home against Guilford, 7-0, on April 15. Cooper Thompson started on the mound and earned the win, after which fellow senior Aiden Esposito followed in relief to finish the game. Junior Nick Caprio had three hits in his four at-bats, while Esposito, junior Harry White, and sophomore Andrew Fritz each had two base knocks for the Huskies in the victory.

Two days later, Morgan hosted Creed-Hillhouse and won big by a score of 20-1.

The Huskies then played at Hale-Ray and won 12-0 on April 19. Morgan received another shutout from its pitching staff, this time from the arm of senior John Urban, who only allowed one hit and stuck out six.

Finally, the Huskies played at Old Saybrook and prevailed 6-0 on April 22.

Softball

Morgan played a trio of recent games and grabbed one win to move to 3-4.

On April 15, Huskies were on the road to face Wilbur Cross and won 19-9. Freshman Sage Follo earned the win on the mound for Morgan. Sophomore Rebecca Shamp scored four runs and drove in two. Freshman Sarah Kuever added three base hits.

Next, Morgan was back home to play against Haddam-Killingworth and lost 14-3 on April 17.

Two days after that, the Huskies went on the road to play Hale-Ray and took a 22-0 defeat.

Boys’ Golf

The Huskies hit the links for the first time this spring last week and came away with a 2-3 record.

On April 17, Morgan was up against Branford and Old Saybrook at Clinton Country Club. Morgan shot 193 to beat the Rams (195), while losing to Branford (185). Senior Jack Bugg shot a 44, senior Burton Caldwell shot a 45, while senior Olivia Powers and sophomore Ryan Powers each turned in a scorecard of 52.

The next day, the Huskies went to the Indian Springs Golf Club to compete against North Branford and won 210-229. Bugg was the medalist in the match with a score of 45. Caldwell shot a 47, sophomore Matthew Zoner penciled in a 57, and Powers shot a 61 for Morgan.

On April 19, the Huskies were back home to compete against Montville and Haddam-Killingworth. Morgan shot 207 as a team and lost to both H-K (195) and Montville (193). Caldwell shot the lowest score for the Huskies with a 43, Bugg was next with a 48, plus Zoner and freshman Ethan Tessman both shot a 58.

Girls’ Golf

The Morgan girls’ golf team played a single contest last week at the par-36 Clinton Country Club and lost to Waterford 228-260 on April 18.

Senior Alex Church shot the lowest for the Huskies with a score of 53. Church was followed by senior Olivia Amendola with a score of 63, sophomore Lindsay Harden with a 66, and sophomore Marie Kane with a score of 78.

Boys’ Tennis

The Huskies won both of their matches last week to make their record 7-1 on the season.

In its matchup on April 17, Morgan went up against Valley Regional and won a close contest, 4-3. In singles play, junior Matt Newfield won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3; and sophomore Garrett Johnson won by default. In doubles, the sophomore team of Paddy Murray and Chris Nuzzo won 6-3, 6-1; while sophomore Sean Cockley and junior Drew Marzano won by default.

Later, the Huskies were home against Portland and won another 4-3 decision. Newfield won 6-2, 6-0; and junior Vincent Tino earned the win, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4. The duos of Murray and Nuzzo, plus senior captain Sam Daily and Marzano, both won by default.

Girls’ Tennis

The Huskies were at home for two contests last week and lost both matches for a mark of 2-5.

Morgan played Valley Regional and lost 5-2 on April 17. In singles play, senior Emma Phelps claimed a 6-4, 6-2 victory in the No. 1 spot. In doubles, juniors Breanna Andrews and Lily Cummings won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1.

The next day, the Huskies hosted Coginchaug and lost 6-1. Phelps won by a 6-3, 6-2 margin for Morgan.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Huskies played three games last week and won one of them to stand at 4-4 on the year.

Morgan’s first game was on the road against the Waterford, where the Huskies lost 11-9 on April 18. In their next game, the Huskies continued their road trip against Cromwell and won 19-3 on April 20. Just 24 hours later, the Huskies were back home at the Indian River Complex, where they lost to Branford 11-8.

Girls’ Lacrosse

Morgan was on the road for one game last week. The Huskies took a 15-6 loss at Lewis Mills on April 19 to move to 0-6 for the season.
