East Haven Baseball Evens Record; Softball Extends Win Streak to Five

Baseball

The East Haven baseball team won two of its three games last week to even its record at 4-4 for the season. After losing to North Haven, the Yellowjackets recorded victories against Foran and Xavier to reach the .500 mark through three weeks of play.

The Easties’ week started with an 8-2 loss against North Haven on April 17. East Haven was held off the board until the seventh inning, when both Andrew Luzzi and Frank Camera got a hit that drove in a run.

The following day, East Haven defeated Foran 10-6 behind home runs from Sam Loda and Ryan Spano. Nick Kraszewski pitched five strong innings to earn his second victory of the year on the mound.

After waiting a day due to rain, the Yellowjackets blew out Xavier by a 12-1 final on April 22. Vin Camera notched his first win on the hill by tossing a four-hitter. Nate Furino had four hits for East Haven, which poured on the runs by plating eight in the fourth inning.

Softball

East Haven picked up four more victories to run its win streak to five straight. The Yellowjackets stand with an overall record of 6-3 and are 3-0 in the SCC Quinnipiac with a huge divisional contest against Hand on the horizon this week.

The Easties’ recent stretch began with them leaving North Branford on the field for a 7-6, walk-off win on April 15. Taylor Myers pitched a complete game to get the victory, allowing just one earned run, while scattering 11 hits. Jessica Stettinger had two hits, including a homer, with three RBI and scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch. Fallon Speers had two hits with two RBI, plus Julia SanGiovanni added a pair of hits.

On April 17, East Haven opened Quinnipiac play with a 9-3 victory over Branford. It was a balanced attack with seven batters collecting hits, led by SanGiovanni, who had three hits two RBI. Selena Mauro took the hill and allowed three unearned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts in a complete game performance.

On April 19, East Haven pounded out 15 hits in an 18-0 trouncing of Hillhouse. Stettinger had three hits with three runs scored and three RBI, while SanGiovanni had three hits, scored two runs, and had two RBI. Brianna Carrano had two RBI and Jessica Shultis had two hits with five RBI. Myers went the distance on the mound, allowing four hits with 10 strikeouts.

The Yellowjackets closed out the week with a 4-0 victory over West Haven on April 23. Speers collected her 100th career hit in the victory for East Haven. Mauro tossed a complete game in which she allowed five hits and struck out three. Mauro also had three hits with a RBI, plus Megan Roberts hit a triple and scored a run for the Yellowjackets.

Boys’ Tennis

East Haven earned its first win of the season last week to move its record to 1-5.

The Yellowjackets opened the week with a 4-3 loss at Foran on April 15. East Haven’s three wins came at the doubles positions as Jake Zito and Rob Scalese won 6-0, 6-0; Seth Proto and Doug Comesanas won 6-1, 6-0; and Nick Kluth and Anthony Pettola prevailed by a 6-0, 6-0 score. In singles action, Tony Cofrancesco lost 6-0, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2); Spencer Goldberg lost 6-3, 6-2; Brendan So took a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 defeat; and Nick Vessichio lost 6-1, 6-0.

East Haven traveled to Fairfield Prep and lost 7-0 on April 17, but followed that up with a 7-0 victory over Wilcox Tech at home the next day. Cofrancesco won 6-7, 6-3, 6-3; Goldberg prevailed 6-3, 6-1; So won 6-0, 6-0; and Vessicchio won 6-1, 6-0. In doubles action, Scalese and Zito won 6-0, 6-2; Proto and Comesanas won 6-0, 6-0; and Pettola and Kluth claimed a 6-3, 6-2 victory.

To close out the week, Hand defeated East Haven 7-0 on April 19. Cofrancesco and Goldberg both lost 6-0, 6-0; So lost 6-2, 6-1; and Vessicchio dropped a 6-2, 6-1 contest. Zito and Schalese lost 6-0, 6-1; Proto and Comesanas lost 6-0, 6-1; and Kluth and Pettola took a 6-3, 6-1 defeat.

Girls’ Tennis

The Yellowjackets took a pair of shutout defeats last week and are now 4-2 this year.

On April 17, North Haven topped East Haven 7-0. In singles, Jenna Pane lost 6-0, 6-0; Devyn Gargano lost 6-1, 6-2; Karla Gonzalez took a 6-0, 6-0 loss; and Julianna Mikulski lost 6-0, 6-0. In doubles action, Autumn Hernandez and Sandy Nguyen lost 6-0, 6-3; Nhi Trinh and Mikayla Raffone dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision; and Alexis Pendziwater and Emma Luden lost 6-1, 6-0.

On April 21, Mercy defeated East Haven 7-0. Gargano lost 6-0, 6-0; Mikulski lost 6-0, 6-0; Nguyen lost 6-1, 6-0; and Hernandez took a 6-0, 6-0 defeat. For the doubles matches, Trinh and Pendziwater lost 6-0, 6-0; Victoria Gaudino and Jade Roberts lost 6-0, 6-1; and Luden and Kelly Wysocki dropped a 6-0, 6-1 contest.

Golf

East Haven lost a pair of contests on the road in last week’s action.

On April 18, Foran defeated East Haven 200-214. Joe Aloi earned medalist honors for the Yellowjackets with a score of 47. East Haven’s other golfers included Josh Palmer (53), Matt Latella (56), and Jonathan Moscato (58). The next day, Law posted a 183-204 victory over the Yellowjackets. Golfers for East Haven (0-4) included Mike Mosato (50), Latella (51), Aloi (52), and Logan Hamilton (51).
