Special Olympics Connecticut recently honored Derrick Ford of East Haven at its annual Hall of Fame event on March 22. The event celebrates the organization’s extraordinary athletes, volunteers, and sponsors for their dedication, leadership, spirit, and support.

Ford was this year’s recipient of the Law Perkins Coach Award. This award is presented to an individual who has made a significant impact on Special Olympics athletes in the areas of training and helping athletes keep physically fit. Ford has been involved with the Special Olympics for 12 years. He began as a Unified Sports partner with the Special Olympics Seaside Saybrook local program in 2003 and assumed the head coach position soon after. Whether it’s practicing basketball or simply showing a teammate how to tie his or her shoes, Ford provides year-round support to each and every athlete on his team. He also participates in the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Connecticut and the organization’s Penguin Plunge fundraiser, while consistently demonstrating leadership and a commitment to his community. Ford is known for his passion, energy, and enthusiasm, and for helping each athlete on his team shine. For Ford, everyone who competes is a unique, courageous, and strong leader, regardless of the final score.
