Westbrook Boys’ and Girls’ Tennis, Softball Sweep Week

Boys’ Tennis

The Knights’ boys’ tennis team had four matchups last week and was victorious in all four of them to continue its undefeated season with a record of 6-0.

Westbrook was at home for East Hampton on April 10 and won by a 7-0 score. In singles play, senior Gus Marx grabbed a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the No. 1 spot; senior David Amendola earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2; senior Dylan Martinson won his match, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3; sophomore Nate Comment won 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot; and senior Jason Raunikar won by default at No. 5. In doubles, seniors Austin Herzy and Phil Hartzell won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1; while juniors Kevin Dickey and Binak Cecunjanin prevailed 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2.

On April 11, the Knights squared off against the Highlanders at Portland and won another 7-0 decision. In singles, Marx won 6-0, 6-1; Amendola claimed a 6-0, 6-0 victory; Martinson won 6-0, 6-0; and Comment and Raunikar won by default. For doubles, the duos of Herzy and Hartzell, plus Dickey and Cecunjanin also won by default.

Two days later, Westbrook was on the road against Haddam-Killingworth and won 7-0.

The next day, the Knights were back at home against Old Lyme and swept the Wildcats 7-0. In singles, Marx won 7-6 (9-7), 3-6, 6-2; Amendola claimed a win, 6-2, 6-3; Martinson won 4-6, 6-2, 6-4; Comment was victorious, 6-1, 6-1; and Raunikar won by default. In doubles, Herzy and Hartzell won 6-1, 6-1; while Dickey and Cecunjanin won by default.

Girls’ Tennis

Westbrook played four contests in five days last week and claimed four victories to bring its record to 5-1.

The Knights played a matchup at East Hampton and won 6-1 on April 10. Senior Casey Burns grabbed a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 1 singles spot; sophomore Sara Farnoli claimed a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the No. 2 spot; and junior Olivia Fabrizi scored a 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) win at No. 3. In doubles play, junior duo Marilyn Ulanowicz and Lexi Vumbeck won 7-5, 6-1 at No. 1; sophomore Savannah Marshall and junior Victoria Koplas earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2; and freshman Julianna Fabrizi and junior Alyssa Esposito won their match at No. 3 by default.

On April 12, Westbrook faced Portland in its home opener and earned a 6-1 victory. Burns won 6-1, 6-4; Farnoli posted a 6-2, 6-0 victory; and senior Aerial Ulanowicz won 6-0, 6-0. For doubles, Marilyn Ulanowicz and Vumbeck won 6-0, 6-1; Marshall and Koplas won 6-0, 6-0; and Juliana Fabrizi and Esposito claimed a 6-1, 6-1 victory.

The following day, the Knights were at Old Saybrook and edged the Rams 4-3. Burns netted a 6-0, 6-0 win on the singles court. In doubles play, Marilyn Ulanowicz and Olivia Fabrizi won 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 1; Marshall and Koplas won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2; and Juliana Fabrizi and Esposito won a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 contest at No. 3.

Westbrook was on the road again when it faced Old Lyme on April 14. The Knights came home with a 7-0 victory to complete their perfect week. In singles, Burns won 6-0, 6-0; Farnoli netted a 6-2, 6-1 win; Victoria Koplas won 6-0, 6-0; and Aerial Ulanowicz won 6-0, 6-0. In doubles play, Marilyn Ulanowicz and Olivia Fabrizi won 6-0, 6-1. The duos of Marshall and Juliana Fabrizi, plus Vumbeck and Esposito both won by default.

Softball

The Knights played three games last week and reeled off a trio of victories to draw even at 3-3 on the year.

Westbrook opened the week at home against Portland and won 13-1 on April 10. Senior Alexa Mulvihill allowed five hits and recorded five strikeouts on the mound, while walking just one. She also went 1-for-4 in the batter’s box with two RBI for the Knights. Sophomore Carolyn Bauman went 1-for-1 with a double, two runs scored, and two RBI.

The very next day, the Knights hit the road to face O’Brien Tech and prevailed handily, 17-5. Senior Biance Ferrucci went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI for the Knights. Junior Kylie Magee was 4-for-5 with two runs and one RBI. Mulvihill was on the mound again for Westbrook and struck out 10, while allowing seven hits.

On April 13, the Knights were back home again to play Valley Regional and prevailed 8-0. Mulvihill pitched a shutout in which she scattered eight hits and helped her own cause by going 2-for-4, including a home run, with five RBI. Freshman Olivia Hartzell was 2-for-2 with three runs scored in the victory.

Baseball

Westbrook took five recent defeats to move to 0-6 on the season.

On April 9, Knights lost a 20-10 home matchup against North Branford.

The next day, Westbrook was on the road and lost to Coginchaug 10-6. Sophomore Daniel Perreault went 2-for-3 with two RBI, sophomore Kyle Robison was 1-for-2 with two RBI and run scored, and junior Jack Hayes was 1-for-2 with a run for the Knights.

After the Coginchaug game, Westbrook was back home against Cromwell and lost 7-0 on April 11.

With their fourth game in four days, the Knights went to Old Saybrook High School to face the Rams and lost 11-4 on April 12. Sophomore Connor Cruz went 1-for-3 with two RBI, while senior Jason Matunas was 2-for-2 with a RBI and a run scored for Westbrook.

The Knights ended their week with a 10-2 home loss against Portland on April 14.
