Valley Boys’ Tennis Takes Two to Stay Undefeated; Girls Split a Pair

Boys’ Tennis

The Valley Regional boys’ tennis team played two matchups last week and won both of them to remain undefeated on the season with a record of 4-0.

In their first contest, the Warriors were home against Cromwell and edged out the Panthers 4-3 on April 10. In singles play, senior Ben Kilby scored a 6-3, 6-3 victory at the No. 1 spot; junior Kevin Baldwin won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2; and Jack Lima claimed a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 3. In doubles, Buddy Haydu and Matt Martinez won 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 at the No. 1 position for Head Coach Bunny Logan’s club.

Later in the week, the Warriors were on the road against Portland and were victorious by a score of 5-0 on April 13. In singles, Kilby won 6-1, 5-7 (11-9), 6-4; Baldwin won 4-6, 6-3, 6-1; Lima won 6-1, 6-1; Freddie Kerr prevailed 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4; and Matt Martinez won at No. 5 by default.

Girls’ Tennis

The Warriors played two contests last week, winning one and losing one for a mark of 2-2 on the season.

Valley’s first match was at Cromwell and the Warriors took a 6-1 loss on April 10. The Warriors’ win came from the freshman duo of Jill deJongh and Maggie Dipierdomenico, who were victorious by a 6-4, 6-4 final at the No. 3 spot.

On April 13, the Warriors were at home against Portland and won 6-1. Freshman Caroline Baldwin won a 6-2, 6-1 match in the No. 2 spot; sophomore Allie Champion claimed a 6-1, 6-4 win at the No. 3 spot; and sophomore Jessica Weinstein won a 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 decision in a nail-biter at No. 4. In doubles, senior Jenna Farley and sophomore Francesca Pisanzio scored a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1; and deJognh and Dipierdomenico prevailed 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2.

Baseball

The Valley Regional baseball team played three games last week took three defeats to move to 2-4 on the year.

In their first game of the week on April 10, the Warriors took a tough loss in 11 innings at home against Cromwell by a score of 7-6.

Two days later, Valley was at Portland and dropped a 3-1 decision. Starting pitcher Colin Sparaco struck out 11 batters for Valley in the loss.

The next day, the Warriors lost by a 13-1 score at home against Shoreline Conference foe Morgan.

Softball

The Warriors had a matchup on the road against Westbrook last week. Valley took an 8-0 defeat to put its record at 1-3 on the season.
