Morgan Baseball Rallies Past H-K to Stay Undefeated; Boys’ Tennis Wins Three

Baseball

The Morgan baseball team was victorious in a trio of recent games to improve its record to 6-0 on the season.

In their first game of the week, the Huskies won at home against East Hampton, 11-5, on April 10.

The following day, Morgan hosted Haddam-Killingworth and prevailed in a close game by an 8-7 margin on April 11. The game was tied 3-3 before H-K plated two runs in the fourth inning, one in the fifth, and another in the sixth to take a 7-3 lead. However, in the bottom half of the frame, freshman Kyle Suraci had a two-base hit to plate two runs and knot it up at 7-7. Senior Aiden Esposito followed with a sacrifice fly to bring in the game-winning run. Suraci and senior captains Madden Ward and Cooper Thompson all had two hits for the Huskies in the come-from-behind victory.

Later in the week, the Huskies were at Valley Regional to play the Warriors and won decisively by the final margin of 13-1 on April 13.

Softball

Morgan played a game against Shoreline Conference opponent Cromwell on April 13. The Huskies took a 9-0 defeat to move to 2-2 for the year.

Boys’ Tennis

The Huskies played three contests on the road last week and won all of them to make their record 5-1 in the 2017 spring season.

In its matchup on April 10, Morgan went up against Old Lyme and won a close contest, 4-3. In singles, senior captain Sam Moran claimed a win, 6-2, 6-4, in the No. 1 spot; while sophomore Garrett Johnson won 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 5 spot. In doubles, the sophomore team of Paddy Murray and Chris Nuzzo recorded a 7-5, 6-4 victory; plus sophomore Sean Cockley and senior captain Sam Dailey won by default.

The next day, the Huskies were at Coginchaug and swept that contest 7-0. In singles play, Moran won 6-1, 7-5; junior Patrick Markovics claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2; junior Matt Newfield won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3; junior Drew Marzano earned the win, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, at No. 4; and Johnson won 6-0, 6-0. The duos of Murray and Nuzzo, plus Cockley and Daily both won by default.

On April 14, Morgan faced Cromwell and defeated the Panthers 7-0. In singles, Moran won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1; Markovics grabbed a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2; Newfield won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3; Johnson claimed the win, 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-4, at No. 4; and Cockley won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5. For doubles, Murray and Nuzzo won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1; and Daily and sophomore Matt Ford won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2.

Girls’ Tennis

The Huskies were on the court for two contests last week and split the pair for a mark of 2-3.

In the first contest, Morgan was at home against Old Lyme and won 4-3 on April 10. In singles play, senior Emma Phelps claimed a 6-0, 7-5 victory in the No. 1 spot; and junior Grace Hull won at No. 4 by default. In doubles, sophomores Becca Cockley and Ingrid Rodriguez won 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2; while sophomores Bea Atengco and Melanie Corretti won their match in the No. 3 spot due to forfeit.

On April 12, the Huskies visited North Branford and lost 4-3. In singles play, Phelps won 6-4, 6-3. In doubles, juniors Breanna Andrews and Lily Cummings won 6-0, 6-0; plus Atengco and Corretti won their match, 6-2, 6-2.

Two days later, Morgan was back home against Cromwell and lost 6-1. In doubles, Andrews and Cummings won 7-6, 5-7, 7-5 at the No. 1 for the Huskies.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Huskies played two games last week and narrowly won both contests to stand at 3-2 this year.

Morgan’s first game was against the Cougars at Haddam-Killingworth, where the Huskies prevailed 11-10 on April 10. In its next game, Morgan was back home at the Indian River Complex to face North Branford and won by a 13-12 score on April 13.

Girls’ Lacrosse

Morgan played three games last week took three defeats to move to 0-5 for the season.

In their first game of the week, the Huskies took a 7-4 defeat to Ellington at the Indian River Complex on April 10. The next day, Morgan remained home to face off against Haddam-Killingworth and lost 22-7. In their final game of the week, the Huskies traveled to North Branford to match up against the Thunderbirds and lost 16-0 on April 13.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Huskies competed against host Haddam-Killingworth and Valley Regional on April 5 and recorded several first-place finishes at the tri-meet.

Senior Alyssa Robinson grabbed first place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.3 seconds for the Huskies. Junior Kate Daley earned first in the 3,200-meter run behind a time of 11:39.96. The quartet of sophomore Issy Ranaudo, junior Courtney Viglione, junior Alison Gardner, and freshman Maura Kelly claimed first in the 4x400-meter relay by running a 4:28.40.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

On April 5, Morgan went to Haddam-Killingworth High School to square off against Valley Regional and the host Cougars. Morgan notched a pair of individual victories against its two Shoreline Conference adversaries.

Junior Thomas Southwood earned first place in the 400-meter run with a time of 55.4 seconds for the Huskies. Sophomore Bryce Thomas claimed first place in the 100-meter dash by finishing with a time of 11.6 seconds.
