Branford’s Track Teams Sweep; Softball Grabs First Win

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Hornets’ girls’ outdoor track squad posted an 89.5-48.5 victory over Oronoque Division opponent Career, along with a 115-18 win versus Amistad in a tri-meet on April 12. Branford improved to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the division with the sweep.

Keira Integlia claimed victory in two throwing events by winning both the javelin (99 feet-9 inches) and the shot put (30-5.5) for the Hornets. Branford’s other first-place finishes included Leah Pendl-Robinson in the 100 hurdles (19.9 seconds), Liante Claude for the 400 (61.2), Amanda Acquarulo in the high jump (4-10), Molly Zaffino in the 300 hurdles (57.5), and Kiersten Bjork for the discus with a toss of 80-7.

Bjork also finished second (81-4) in the javelin with Diana Karosas placing third (67-1) for Branford. Additionally, Integlia placed second in the discus at 76-6, while Kathryn Pollard came in third place with a 62-3. Head Coach Kevin Connell also noted Hailey LaBonte’s leap of 28 feet in the triple jump, as well as Lily Milici’s distance of 13-6 for the long jump.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Branford was on the road for a duel with Career and Amistad at Bowen Field in New Haven last week. The Hornets prevailed 104-37 against Oronoque Division foe Career and won 124-17 versus Amistad. Branford is now 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the Oronoque.

Marzio Mastroianni took first place in both the 400 (53.2) and the 3,200 (11:19) for Branford, while Giancarlo Giannini posted victories in the javelin (95-0) and the discus (64-8). Also grabbing first place were Aidan Kropiwnicki in the 800 (2:24.5), Harrison Troidle for the 1,600 (5:20), Kadir Sahin (19.8) in the 110 high hurdles, Nolan Scott in the 300 intermediate hurdles (48.5), and Joe Hock in the shot put (personal best of 32-7.75). The Hornets’ 4x800 relay of Edward Pascale, Andrew Byrne, Ryan McCarthy, and Troidle was also victorious with a time of 11:08.

Finishing second for Branford were Scott in the 110 hurdles (21.5), Kropiwnicki in the 400 (55.5), Byrne for the 3,200 (11:20), McCarthy in the 800 (2:24.9), Sahin in the 300 hurdles (50.1), Matt Alexander in the long jump (19-10), Brandon Perez in the high jump (5-4), Charles Turlis for the discus (60-9), and Justin Dombrowski in the javelin (personal best of 87-2). The Hornets’ 4x100 relay of Alexander, Carlos McCaay, Alex Rode, and Ocean Adhikari placed second with a time of 47.9, plus the 4x400 of Kropiwnicki, Kadir Sahin, Perez, and Aydin Sahin also took second by running a 3:54.

Claiming third place for Head Coach Katherine Flanagan’s squad were McCarthy in the 1,600 (5:23), McCaay in the 200 (24.3), Troidle in the 800 (2:25.2), Yohan Lara for the 300 hurdles (54.4), Danny Palencia in the high jump (5-3), Giannini in the shot put (30-8), and Alec Solomine in the javelin at 87-1.

Softball

Branford picked up its first win of the season when it posted a 27-9 victory at Wilbur Cross on April 13. The Hornets also dropped decisions versus Amity and Guilford last week and are 1-3 on the year.

Branford trailed Cross 9-7 before scoring the final 20 runs of the game. Junior Marisa Minore had a huge day at the dish by getting four hits, including a double and a pair of home runs, with eight RBI. Jess Shanley had five hits with six RBI from the leadoff spot. Olivia Datre earned the win in relief for Head Coach Chuck Reale’s club.

Earlier in the week, Branford took a 16-2 defeat at Amity on April 10.

On April 12, the Hornets hosted Guilford and lost by a 13-0 final.

“We are making progress early on, and our players are working very hard at trying to reach and maintain a higher level of play in order to stay competitive in the SCC,” Coach Reale said. “So far, the young team is responding well.”

Baseball

The Hornets played three recent contests against SCC opponents and came away with one victory to stand at 3-2.

On April 10, the Hornets took a 2-1 loss at West Haven. Two days later, Branford hosted Hand and claimed a 7-5 victory. The day after that, the Hornets went on the road to face Cheshire and were edged by a 2-1 final.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Hornets netted their first victory on the year by virtue of an 18-0 home shutout over Wilbur Cross on April 10. Branford improved its record to 1-2 with the win.

Robbie Lionetti, Mike Parker, and Jack Manware all had two goals with an assist, while Jay Dering also netted a couple of goals for the Hornets. Noah Pantani and Mike White both had a goal with two assists. Nick Cordero and Kordele Brown combined on the shutout in net.

Boys’ Tennis

The Hornets played a pair of matches last week and emerged victorious in one of those contests to move to 1-2 on the season.

Branford began its week with a road match against Foran on April 11 and prevailed 7-0. Three days later, Branford had a match at Guilford and took a 7-0 defeat.
