The Guilford Youth Football and Youth Cheerleading organization said farewell to two longtime board members at a recent board meeting.

Mark Chapman and Jon Root have both been board members for several years, with Chapman serving as the league’s treasurer and Root as the board secretary. Under their guidance, the league has experienced increased participation, a strengthening of the organization’s financial sustainability, numerous enhancements to equipment player safety, increased training, certifications for coaches, as well as overall elevation in the community.

Additionally, both men coached multiple teams during their tenure on the board. Chapman completed his final season as a youth coach last fall, serving as the defensive coordinator of the 8th-grade squad that advanced to the semifinal round of the Shoreline Youth Football Conference Championship playoff bracket. He looks forward to supporting a smooth transition for the next treasurer and will not stray far from Guilford football as his son moves up to the high school program next season.

Root took on double duty as the head coach of the 3rd-grade and 7th-grade teams in 2016, with both groups enjoying success on the field. Root will stay on the sidelines this fall as head coach for the 4th-grade team.

“It has been an honor to serve alongside both Mark and Jon. Guilford Youth Football has grown due to the leadership, dedication, and efforts of these gentlemen,” said league president Rance Hillier. “I look forward to seeing Jon between the lines this coming season as he prepares the 4th-grade team for another successful year. At the same time, I know Mark will be just outside the lines, cheering for his son as he enters the high school program. A sincere and heartfelt thank you to both Mark and Jon.”

Joining the executive board to fill the open positions are the following new members: Ken Alberti (vice president, league development), Karen Chiaia (vice president, cheerleading), Jason Deshefy (secretary), and Kevin Smith (treasurer). The new members join the existing board group, led by Hillier (president), Mike Burrell (vice president, field and game day Coordinator), and Bob Swan (vice president, safety coordinator).
