Spring Season in Full Swing for the Easties

Baseball

The East Haven baseball team won its first game of the 2017 season when the Yellowjackets posted a 14-0 home shutout over Wilbur Cross on April 3.

Nick Guarino was dealing against the Governors as East Haven’s ace tossed six shutout innings before Ryan Spano came in for the final frame. Nick Kraszewski had three hits, including a home run, with five RBI in the victory for Head Coach Butch Johnson’s squad.

On April 5, Notre Dame-West Haven defeated East Haven 5-4 by scoring all of its runs in the final two innings. The Yellowjackets ended the week with a 6-2 loss at Fairfield Ludlowe and are 1-2 to start the year.

Softball

The Yellowjackets were slated to play four games last week, but only got in two in because of the weather. The Yellowjackets split their contests to start the year at 1-1, with the lone win coming in walk-off fashion.

On April 5, East Haven topped Law 5-4 when Julia SanGiovanni’s walk-off single won it for the Easties in the bottom of the seventh inning. Nine different players recorded a hit for Head Coach Ed Crisafi’s club. SanGiovanni led the way by getting three base knocks. Jess Stettinger had a pair RBI, while SanGiovanni, Selena Mauro, and Fallon Speers added a RBI apiece for the Easties. Mauro earned the victory on the mound by allowing four runs on seven hits and striking out three.

On April 8, East Haven traveled to Stamford and lost a 7-1 decision against its non-conference opponent.

Boys’ Tennis

East Haven took a 6-1 road loss versus Xavier to begin its season last week. The Yellowjackets’ lone win came from the No. 2 doubles squad of Seth Proto and Doug Comesanas, who won in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5. In the other doubles matchups, the top pairing of Jake Zito and Rob Scalese lost 6-2, 6-3; and the No. 3 team of Nick Kluth and Anthony Retolla took a 6-0, 6-1 defeat. In singles action, Tony Cofrancesco lost 6-2, 6-1; Spencer Goldberg lost 6-3, 6-0; Brendan So lost 6-0, 6-0; and Nick Vessichio dropped a 6-0, 6-1 contest.

Golf

On April 3, East Haven hit the course at Alling Memorial Golf Club for the first time this season and dropped contests against North Haven and Wilbur Cross. North Haven ended the round with a 195, Cross shot a 210, and East Haven totaled a score of 212.

The Easties’ golfers included Joe Aloi, who shot a 48; along with Matt Latella (51), Jon Moscato (56), and Josh Palmer (57).

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Easties played host to Wilbur Cross to start the year on April 5 and took a 99-55 defeat. Reinaldo Martinez, Jordan Ingram, and Niam Coward had outstanding performances for the Yellowjackets as all three athletes won multiple events. Ingram was victorious in the 100 (11.1) and 200 (22.9); Coward won the shot put (44-1) and discus (93-3); and Martinez took top honors for the 110 hurdles (18.24) and 300 hurdles (44.18). Martinez also placed third in the triple jump (34.0). Dom Manna won the javelin with a toss of 109-3 feet, while Max Kawshi tied with Cross’s Shariff Gibson for first in the high jump with leap of 5-2.

Other competitors who finished in the top three of individual events included Ian Loehmann in the 110 hurdles, Josh Rao in the javelin, discus and shot put; Manna in the shot put, and McClay Marshall in the 200.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Yellowjackets hosted Wilbur Cross in their opening meet of the season last week and lost by a 95-49 final. Event winners for East Haven included Summer Onorato in the javelin (77-8); Molly Mazzucco in the high jump (4-8); Haley Montesanto in the 300 hurdles (53.4); and Sydney Marquardt in both the long jump (14-9) and pole vault (7-6).
