Rams’ Boys’ Lacrosse Gets a Win; Girls’ Track Takes First at Bellringer Invitational

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Old Saybrook boys’ lacrosse team recorded its first victory of the season by defeating Cromwell 9-5 at home on April 5.

Senior Christos Ellinas scored five goals for Old Saybrook, which also received goals from senior Tenzin Rabjam and junior Max Chupak. Senior Ashton Reina and junior William Patterson-Hatem notched a goal and an assist apiece, while seniors Jack Olivieri and John Guarnaccia each added an assist. Junior Keaton Roarick made 18 saves in net for the Rams.

Earlier in the week, the Rams went on the road to play Morgan at the Indian River Complex and lost 10-1 on April 3. Old Saybrook is 1-2 on the year.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Rams played three games last week and won two of those matchups to bring their record to 2-1 on the season.

In its first game of the week, Old Saybrook defeated Morgan at home, 20-5, on April 3. In their next game on April 5, the Rams prevailed over St. Bernard at home by a score of 9-4.

Two days later, Old Saybrook went on the road to face off against North Branford and lost a close game, 12-10. Junior Kendall Hartt scored three goals, freshman Izzy Sigersmith and sophomore Allyson Kehlenbach each had two goals, while sophomores Mandy Beck, Kathryn Spotts, and Kelsey True all had one goal each.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Rams took part in the Bellringer Invitational in East Hampton last week and captured first place with a score of 143.5 points on April 8.

Old Saybrook earned first place in several events, including the 4x800-meter relay, where the quartet of senior Jael Givehand, senior Alyssa Diaz, sophomore Jessica Stratton, and freshman Grace Hanratty finished with a time of 10:50.28. Other first-place finishes by the Rams included Givehand in the 1,600-meter run (5:56.42), senior Devin King in the 400-meter dash (1:04.5) and the long jump (15 feet-10 inches), junior Tyra Finkeldey in the pole vault (10 feet), and sophomore Rachel Vigorita in the high jump (4 feet-10 inches).

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Old Saybrook competed at last week’s Bellringer Invitational and took third place by scoring 85 points.

The Rams had a couple of first-place finishes at the meet. Austin Reynolds won the triple jump with a distance of 40 feet-11 inches, while senior Shane Henderson prevailed in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:07.42.

Girls’ Tennis

Old Saybrook played two matches to begin the 2017 campaign and won both contests to put its record at 2-0.

In their first matchup, the Rams bested Morgan at home by a score of 7-0 on April 3. Senior Rosie Rothman grabbed a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles; junior Tanya Gianitsos won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot; senior Erin Stangel prevailed 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3; and senior Isabell Leciani won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot. In doubles, senior Lucy Marinelli and Sam Fucci won 7-5, 7-5 at the No. 1 position; junior Arina Jiang and sophomore Amy Young claimed victory, 6-0, 6-2, at the No. 2; and sophomore Ana Hester and senior Jillian Hirst won at the No. 3 spot, 6-2, 6-2.

On April 5, Old Saybrook traveled to Coginchaug and won 6-1. Rothman claimed a 6-3, 6-0 win at the No. 1 spot; Gianitsos won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2; Stangel grabbed a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3; and Luciani won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4. In doubles play, Jiang and Young won 7-6, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot; and Hester and Hirst were victorious, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 3.

Boys’ Tennis

The Rams opened their season with two contests last week and won one of them to stand at 1-1.

Old Saybrook’s first matchup was on the road against Morgan, where the Rams prevailed by a score of 6-1 on April 3. Then on April 5, Old Saybrook lost to Westbrook, 7-0.

Baseball

The Rams opened their 2017 campaign by playing three games last week and took three defeats.

In its first game of the year, Old Saybrook lost at Haddam-Killingworth, 6-0, on April 3. Senior Philip Ledwith and junior Hayden Lockhart pitched for the Rams.

Two days later, Old Saybrook lost to Portland 5-0. Two days after that, the Rams played Valley Regional at home and lost 5-0.
