North Branford Baseball Splits First Two Games; Girls’ Lacrosse Starts 2-0

Baseball

The North Branford baseball squad split its first two games of the 2017 season last week by beating Creed-Hillhouse with ease, 18-3, on April 3, after which the Thunderbirds took an 11-4 loss to Morgan on April 5.

Mike Hoyt pitched five solid innings for North Branford in the win over Creed-Hillhouse. Jeff Jablonski took the loss on the hill against Morgan.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Thunderbirds won their first two games of the season by upending a pair of Shoreline Conference foes last week. On April 3, North Branford went on a scoring spree as it prevailed by a 21-11 final against Valley Regional. Then in its home opener, North Branford edged out Old Saybrook 12-10.

Boys’ Lacrosse

North Branford lost three games last week to drop to 1-3 for the season.

On April 5, Valley Regional topped North Branford 19-10. Dillon Blake scored six times and added a pair of assists for the T-Birds, while Brian McKee netted three goals and Connor Odell scored once. Odell, McKee, and Dylan Martinik had an assist each. Noah Taylor made 13 saves in goal for North Branford, which finished the game with less than a 35-percent success rate in the face-off circle.

On April 7, Haddam-Killingworth defeated the Thunderbirds 12-9. Odell finished with six goals for North Branford, plus Blake scored twice and Peter Taylor netted one. Noah Taylor made 17 saves in net

The very next day, non-conference opponent Foran defeated the T-Birds 11-5. Odell and Blake both scored twice and Brian McKee added the team’s other goal. Sean McKee had three assists for North Branford, which saw Noah Taylor record 20 saves. North Branford won just 21 percent of the face-offs in taking the defeat.

Boys’ Tennis

North Branford faced Cromwell in its first match of the season last week. The T-Birds took a 6-1 loss to the Panthers on April 5.

Girls’ Tennis

The T-Birds welcome a new head coach to the program in Matt Tortora this season. In its first match of the year, North Branford took a 5-2 loss against Cromwell on April 5.
