Huskies’ Baseball Take Three to Start Season; Softball Goes 2-1

Baseball

The Morgan baseball team began the 2017 season by playing three games and won all three them all to stand at 3-0.

In their first game, the Huskies won a pitcher’s duel at home against Cromwell, 2-0, on April 3. Cooper Thompson earned the win on the mound, and fellow senior Aidan Esposito pitched in relief for Morgan. The Huskies got the only run they needed in the bottom of the fifth inning, when senior Harry White drove in junior Nick Caprio with a single that broke the scoreless tie. Caprio went 2-for-2 in the game.

Two days later, Morgan traveled to North Branford to face off against the Thunderbirds and prevailed 11-4.

Later in the week, the Huskies played at home against Portland and won by the final of 7-1. Morgan’s winning pitcher was senior John Urban, who relieved by Esposito. The Huskies put a three-spot on the board in the first inning, added another in the second, and then tacked on three more in the sixth for good measure. Caprio had another strong game at the plate by going 2-for-2 with three RBI for Morgan.

Softball

The Huskies opened their campaign with three games last week, winning two of them for an early 2-1 record.

Morgan started the season at home against Old Lyme and won a close game, 9-8, on April 3. Four days later, the Huskies were on the road against Portland and recorded a decisive 21-7 victory. On April 8, Morgan took a 17-1 loss against Notre Dame-Fairfield.

Boys’ Tennis

Morgan played three contests to start the 2017 season week and was victorious in two of them to own a 2-1 record.

In their first matchup, the Huskies played against Old Saybrook at home and lost 6-1. In doubles play, the sophomore duo of Paddy Murray and Chris Nuzzo won 6-0, 6-0 for Morgan.

Two days later, Morgan was on the road to play East Hampton, and the Huskies swept that contest 7-0. In singles play, senior captain Sam Moran claimed a win 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 1 spot; junior Patrick Markovics earned a win 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 2 spot; junior Matt Newfield won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3; junior Vincent Tino earned the win, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4,; and junior Drew Marzano won 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 5 spot. Murray and Nuzzo recorded another 6-0, 6-0 victory; while sophomores Caleb Adams-Hull and Garrett Johnson won 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 2 spot.

On April 7, the Huskies faced Haddam-Killingworth at home and defeated the Cougars 5-2. In singles play, Newfield won 6-0, 6-0; Tino triumphed 6-0, 6-1; and Marzano won by default. For doubles, Murray and Nuzzo prevailed 6-0, 6-0 and Adams-Hull Johnson also won by default.

Girls’ Tennis

The Huskies opened their year with two contests last week, winning one for a mark of 1-1.

In the first contest, Morgan went on the road to Old Saybrook and lost 7-0 on April 3.

On April 5, the Huskies hosted East Hampton and won 4-3. In singles play, senior Emma Phelps claimed a 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 victory in the No. 1 spot. In doubles, the junior duo of Brenna Andrews and Lily Cummings won 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 1 position. Sophomores Becca Cockley and Ingrid Rodriguez won their first set 7-5 and took the second by injury default at No. 2. Sophomores Bea Atengco and Melanie Corretti won their match in the No. 3 spot due to forfeit.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Huskies played two games last week and split the pair to stand at 1-2 this year.

Morgan’s first game was against Old Saybrook at Indian River Complex, where the Huskies defeated the Rams 10-1 on April 3. In their next game, the Huskies were on the road at Bacon Academy and they lost a close game, 8-7, on April 8.

Girls’ Lacrosse

Morgan took on Shoreline Conference rival Old Saybrook last week. The Huskies took a 20-5 defeat on the road and are now 0-2 on the season.
