Guilford Piles Up the Victories During First Week of Spring Season

Softball

The Guilford softball team opened up its season by recording a 6-3 win over Lyman Hall on April 7.

Guilford got out to a good start with three runs in the first inning on a double by Sara Barreira, a two-run triple from Emily Torre, and another three-bagger by Jordyn Goldstein. Guilford was up 6-1 after two innings and held on for the victory. Barreira went 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI to lead Guilford to the win. Amanda King struck out to pick up the win in the circle.

Baseball

Guilford was victorious in its first two games of the 2017 spring campaign. The Indians opened their year with a bang on April 7, when they routed Career by a 19-2 final. Guilford then improved to 2-0 after posting a 3-2 win over Fairfield Warde on April 8.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Guilford opened its dual-meet season with a 77-68 win over Hand on April 5.

Event victories for the Indians came by way of the 4x800 relay (10:20.60); Meredith Bloss in the 1,600 (5:28.00); Jacqui Guerra for the 800 (2:22.80) and 3,200 (12:10.90); Sophia Migani for the high jump (4-4); Peggy Wagner for the triple jump (28-7.50); Mallory Peters for the shot put (26-5) and discus (89-9); and Julia Hyman in the pole vault (6-0).

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Indians began their season by taking a 93-57 loss to Hand on April 5.

Jordan Lembo-Frey won the 100 in 11.1 seconds, tying a school record, for Guilford. He also took the 200 in 22.7, finished second in the 400 in 52.0, and led off the winning 4x100 relay (that also featured Sam Sessions, Caleb Benedict, and Corey Sondak) in 45.6. Finn Davidson won the 1,600 in 4:39.8 and the 800 in 2:09.4, Sam Sessions finished runner-up in the 100 in 11.5 and third in the 200 in 23.9, and Connor Rose finished second in both the shot put (76-8) and the discus (84-1). Jacob Sabol-Low won the long jump with a leap of 17 feet-1 inch and Ryan Costanzo finished second (16-1.5). Thomas Larkin Well came in second in the triple jump with a 36 foot-11 inch effort. Benjamin Crair finished second in the 3,200 in 11:06 and Nathan Van Zandt finished third in 11:07. Benedict finished third in the 300 hurdles in 48.5

“The team has strong senior leadership in Sam Sessions, Finn Davidson, Jordan Lembo-Frey, Caleb Benedict, Thomas Larkin-Wells, Jacob Sabol-Low, Garrett Hughes, and Josh Stern. The seniors not only scored the bulk of our points in the meet, but also provide our underclassmen with extraordinary leadership as attentive mentors,” said Head Coach George Cooksey. “With over 40 underclassmen, our team is filled with young, committed athletes who show up every day to improve in their events. [Girls’ outdoor track Head Coach Jon Rivera] provided these athletes with a sound training foundation in cross country and indoor track that we hope to build upon as the season progresses.”

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Indians recorded a 9-5 triumph over Shelton on April 5 before taking an 8-7 loss to Simsbury on April 8. Guilford now stands at 1-2 on the young season.

Girls’ Lacrosse

Guilford faced off against non-conference opponent Haddam-Killingworth in its first game of the year last week. The Indians dropped an 11-10 decision to the Cougars on April 8.

Boys’ Tennis

The Indians opened their campaign with a 5-2 victory versus Shelton on April 3. The Indians then lost by that same 5-2 final against Hall two days later for an early mark of 1-1.

Girls’ Tennis

Guilford took an 5-2 loss to Lauralton Hall in its season opener on April 3. The Indians were then edged by defending SCC Division champion Amity, 4-3, on April 5 to stand at 1-1.

In the Amity loss, Faren Roth (7-5, 6-0), Acadia Hall (6-3, 6-1), and the tandem of sisters Charlotte and Molly Babbin (6-4, 6-0) recorded victories for the Indians
