Mike Burchell is a junior who recently completed his second season as a member of the Hand wrestling team. Burchell recently traveled to Virginia Beach to compete at the Junior National Championships on March 24-25 and placed seventh in the heavyweight division. There were 48 states and more than 1,000 athletes represented at the national meet.

Burchell finished with a record of 3-0 for day one of the event. The next day, Burchell dropped a contest and went to the consolation bracket. Burchell won his first match by pin in the consolation bracket, qualifying him for the medal rounds. Once there, he went up against a prior opponent from Virginia and was defeated. However, because he had already qualified for the medal rounds, Burchell earned the chance to wrestle for seventh place. Burchell won his last match in dominating style by a 10-4 decision to place seventh and earn All-American honors, which went to the top eight finishers in each weight class at the meet.
