On March 4, the Old Saybrook Parks and Recreation (OSPR) Department held its fifth annual Connecticut Recreation and Parks Association’s (CRPA) HotShots Tournament. At the event, each participant had three one-minute rounds to make as many baskets from five specific “hot spots” on the court. Every spot was worth a different amount of points and each player had to get his or her own rebounds and then dribble to each spot. At the end of all three rounds, their scores were totaled and the participant with the highest total score won for his or her age group and division. This year, OSPR had 32 participants from three age groups compete in the boys’ and girls’ divisions. The first-place winners from each age group and division advanced to the State Tournament.

In the 9-10-year-old boys’ division, Drew Kulmann won first place with an event-high score of 127, while Wesley Nobile took second with 102, and Wes Percival placed third with 88. In the 9-10 year-old girls’ divisions, Erin Fiorelli placed first with a score of 45. Nora Kulman placed second with 24, and Colbie Ryan finished third with 17.

In the boys’ 11-12-year-old division, Bradley Kulmann took home first place with a score of 119, Cameron DeAngelo placed second with 83, and Luke Webb finished with a score of 73. In the girls’ 11-12-year old division, Abby Colella finished first with a score of 89 and Cassie Johnson placed second with an 83.

In the boys’ 13–15-year old division, Gino Gallitto placed first with a score of 120, in second place was Garrett Brady with a score of 108, and in third place was Cody Mayers with a score of 72. In the girls’ 13-15-year old division, Abby Bergeron finished first with a score of 76, Kendal Kollmer took home second with 60 points, and in third place was Megan Kapij with a score of 52.

Last year, OSPR hosted the CRPA State Championship for the first time and sent six participates to the event. Abby Bergeron won her division, while Jake Butler, Gino Gallitto, and Priscilla Gumkowski were all runner-up. OSPR will host this year’s State Tournament on Saturday, April 1 at the Recreation Center on Main Street. The OSPR is in the midst of wrapping up its basketball season that started last November.
