Boys’ Basketball

The North Haven boys’ basketball team saw its season come to a close with a 55-44 loss at Newington in the first round of the Class L State Tournament on March 7. The Indians, who made both states and the SCC Tournament for the second year in a row with Head Coach Justin Falcon, finished the 2016-’17 campaign with an overall record of 11-11 after going 11-9 for the regular season.

The 22nd-seeded Indians and No. 11 Newington were deadlocked at 13-all following the first quarter of their state tourney matchup. Newington outscored North Haven in both the second (11-7) and third quarters (12-5) to take a 36-25 advantage into the final frame. Both teams scored 19 points in the fourth quarter and Newington came away with the 11-point victory to advance to the second round, where it lost to Wilton.

Senior Jack Steinman scored 16 points in his final game with North Haven boys’ hoops. Fellow seniors Tom Dodge, Tom Myjak, Preston Young, Anthony Beretta, Mike Gagliardi, and Paul Murray are the other seniors on the Indians and each of them played in the Newington contest. Junior Jake Lafond scored six points, while freshman Ethan Okwuosa added five points for North Haven.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

Kyle Duby represented the North Haven boys’ swimming and diving team at the Class M Diving State Championship, which was held at Bulkeley High School on March 8.

Duby had previously finished ninth at the Southern Connecticut Conference Championship by scoring a 273.20 for 11 dives. During the regular season, Duby broke the Indians’ 40-year-old boys’ diving record by less than a point when he scored 256.85 points for a six-dive performance during North Haven’s Senior Night home meet against Xavier on Feb, 13.
