Girls’ Basketball

The East Haven girls’ basketball team finished its season with an overall record of 18-6 after taking a 60-55 defeat to Waterford in the second round of the Class M State Tournament on March 3. The Easties had previously defeated Wilcox Tech by a wide margin in the first round.

On Feb. 28, the 8th-seeded Yellowjackets topped No. 25 Wilcox Tech 82-25 in a Class M State Tournament first round home game. It was a game the Easties controlled from the start as they outscored the opposition 20-5 in the first quarter and then won the second quarter 22-2. Taking a 42-7 lead into halftime, East Haven kept its foot on the gas pedal by scoring 40 more points before the night was done.

Ten different players made their way to the score sheet for East Haven, which connected on 33 field goals, including 10 from downtown. Kylie Schlottman led the way with 20 points, while Alexis Pendziwater hit five triples to finish with 17 points. Isabella Ragaini added 10 points in the victory.

Three nights later, East Haven hosted No. 9 seed Waterford in the second round of states and lost by a 60-55 final. The Yellowjackets had their usual fast start and held a 28-23 lead going into the half. However, a defensive adjustment by Waterford caused the Easties to struggle early in the third and allowed Waterford to go on a 16-6 run to take the lead. East Haven battled back, but was never able to regain the advantage. Waterford connected on nine of its 10 free throw attempts down the stretch to hold off East Haven’s final surge. Haley Capozzo scored 14 points for the Yellowjackets, Schlottman scored 13 points and Ragaini had 10.

Cheerleading

The East Haven cheerleading team competed in the Class L State Championship at Floyd Little Athletic Center on March 4. The Yellowjackets recorded a score of 154.4 points and finished in fourth place out of 21 teams at the meet. Lauralton Hall scored a 164.9 to take first place.
