On Feb. 17, the Old Saybrook Parks and Recreation Department held its inaugural Co-ed Indoor Soccer Tournament as part of its Friday Night Teen Center program. The program, which had 24 participants, took place on two Friday nights and was free to all Old Saybrook residents who are in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade.

On Feb. 10, the first night of competition consisted of a round robin style tournament in which each team played eight games to establish seeding in the double elimination tournament on Feb. 17. All the players made their own rosters, team names, and uniforms. The highlight of the tournament was the Sweet Luna’s Team Spirit Award. This award was given to the team that displayed the most spirit in its team uniform and/or costume. Winning the award from The VIP’s were Noah Skiles, William Potter, Weston Richards, and Maggie Ashe, who dressed up in their team’s uniform for both nights of the event. The Old Saybrook Parks and Recreation Department thanks Sweet Luna’s for its donation to this tournament.

Winning the overall tournament was team Black Magic, which featured Trey Martin, Carter Gibson, Gannon Effinger, Bridget Kawecki, and Will Webb. In the championship game, Black Magic won a high-scoring contest against team Apple Jax, which consisted of Allie LaMotte, Peter Wisialowski, Ryan Stratton, and Bradley Kulmann. Like previous winners of the tournament, team Black Magic got to sign the trophy ball that is displayed in the Recreation Center.
