Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven sponsored the recent Southern Connecticut Conference Boys’ Swimming and Diving Championship by making a $5,000 donation to underwrite the cost of the SCC Qualifying meet, which the conference had plan to abolish due to financial constraints this year. In return, the 16 boys’ swim teams that compete in the SCC held a Lap-a-Thon fundraiser for the Lion Heart Foundation that supports breast cancer research. Thus far, the teams have combined to raise $31,206, including $1,375 raised by North Haven’s 12 athletes.

At the SCC Qualifier on Feb. 27, Indians’ Head Coach Martha Phelan presented a check of $29,000 for the Lion Heart Foundation to Dr. David Stern from the Yale Cancer Hospital. In 2015, Dr. Stern was awarded a Lion Heart grant for research of new drug combinations aimed at previously untreated triple negative breast cancer. Stern has been involved in breast cancer research throughout his professional career and is a friend of Lion Heart who’s supportive of its mission. North Haven competed at the SCC Qualifying meet and was then represented at the SCC Diving and Swimming championships, which were during the next two days.
