Old Saybrook Boys’ Hoops Beats H-K to Advance to Shoreline Semis; Track Sends a Few to the Open

Boys’ Basketball

The Old Saybrook boys’ basketball team had a busy week with four games last week, including a 71-61 victory against Haddam-Killingworth in the Shoreline Conference Tournament quarterfinals on Feb. 25. Previously, the Rams concluded their regular season by losing a 67-56 home game against Westbrook on Feb. 21, beating Coginchaug by a 65-51 final in another home game the following night, and then taking a 77-67 loss at Creed in New Haven on Feb. 24. Old Saybrook went 13-7 for the regular season and is 14-7 overall.

The Rams are playing Westbrook in a Shoreline Conference semifinal game at Coginchaug at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 28. If Old Saybrook wins, it will face the winner of East Hampton and Coginchaug for the conference title at Morgan at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 3. After that, Old Saybrook will play in the Class S State Tournament.

Facing Westbrook last week, the Rams were only down 31-29 at the end of the first half, but the Knights had the better of play of the second half, and went on to the victory. Senior center Jake Tully scored a game-high 17 points and added three rebounds. Senior guard Connel Henderson poured in 16 points and grabbed six rebounds. Sophomore guard Shane Henderson added 13 points, while junior guard Victor Pascoe provided 10 points and hauled in eight rebounds for Old Saybrook.

Against Coginchaug on Senior Night, the Rams led 35-17 by the end of the first half and came away with a 65-51 win. Connel Henderson and Shane Henderson both scored 23 points in the victory. Pascoe added seven points with seven rebounds.

In their regular season finale with Creed, the Rams trailed the Howling Wolves 19-14 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, Old Saybrook came back at Creed hard to lead 37-31 at halftime. The Howling Wolves battled back in the third quarter by scoring 19 points to the Rams’ 12 and were up 50-49 entering the final frame. In the fourth quarter, the Howling Wolves ran away with the game by outscoring Old Saybrook 27-18 en route to a 77-67 victory. Shane Henderson scored 27 and had five boards for the Rams. Connel Henderson had 15 points and four assists, plus Pascoe contributed 11 points and nine rebounds.

Against H-K in the Shoreline Conference quarterfinals, Old Saybrook trailed 15-10 after the first quarter, but then came alive in the second. The Rams scored 22 points and slowed down the Cougars by allowing only 13 to take a 32-28 lead that they would not relinquish in the 71-61 victory. Connel Henderson had 18 points and dished out three assists, while Pascoe put together another solid showing with 16 points and 13 boards. Tully added 10 points and eight rebounds for the Rams, who also saw Pascoe draw two important charges during the game.

Girls’ Indoor Track

The Rams sent a handful of competitors to the State Open Championship at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 20.

Tara Finkledey placed seventh in the pole vault by clearing a height of 10 feet-6 inches for Old Saybrook, matching the height from her victory at the Class S State Championship. In the 4x800 relay, the Rams’ quartet of junior Allison Bruehwiler, freshman Grace Hanratty, senior Jael Givehand, and sophomore Jessica Stratton placed 10th with a time of 9:59.74. In the long jump, senior Devyn King finished 15th by reaching a distance of 15-10.75.

Boys’ Indoor Track

Eric Sultini represented Old Saybrook at last week’s State Open Championship. Sultini, a junior, competed in the 600-meter run and took eighth place with a time of 1:25.71.
