Yellowjackets’ Wrestling, Track Represent at State Open

Wrestling

The East Haven wrestling squad saw four athletes compete at the State Open Championship at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 24 and 25. Competing for East Haven were Victor Garcia in the 106-pound weight class, along with Tanner DiVito (120), Joe Milano (126), and Damien Benway (170). The Yellowjackets recorded six points and finished in 59th place at the meet.

Garcia lost his first round bout by pin at the 3:31 mark to Bristol’s Bryce Beebe. In the consolation bracket, he won his first match by an 8-1 decision over James Rondini from Platt before losing in the next round to Benjamin Smart of Ridgefield.

DiVito was defeated in the opening round by Brian Connolly of Canton, 8-5. James Lunt of Xavier defeated DiVito by a 10-3 decision in the first bout of the consolation round.

Milano lost his first round battle with Newington’s Tyler Savluk by a 7-4 decision. In the opening round of the consolation matches, Nonnewaug’s David Dabkowski defeated Milano 6-3.

Benway lost his first round match to Fairfield’s Matheus Ribeiro by pin at 4:52. He won his first consolation match by pin over Foran’s Umer Khan at 0:43 before losing in the next round to Fairfield Prep’s Evan Titus.

Boys’ Indoor Track

Niam Coward competed for East Haven at the State Open Championship at Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on Feb. 20. Coward’s throw of 46 feet-6 inches was good for eighth place overall.

Boys’ Basketball

East Haven’s season came to an close with a 64-52 loss to North Haven on Senior Night on Feb. 20. The Yellowjackets finished with a record of 3-17 on the year.

The two squads played an even first half, but North Haven pulled away late by outscoring the Easties 22-12 in the fourth quarter. Ryan Spano scored a team-high 17 points, while Ed Popolizio scored 14 and Nick Guarino added 11.

Girls’ Basketball

East Haven enters the Class M State Tournament as the No. 8 seed and is hosting No. 25 Wilcox Tech for a first round matchup at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 28. With a win, the Yellowjackets would host the winner of 9th-seeded Waterford and No. 24 Wolcott in the second round at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 3.
