Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Guilford girls’ ice hockey squad came away with its first victory of the campaign in its season finale on Feb. 18. Guilford skated to a 3-2 victory versus Lauralton Hall to get itself in the win column this winter. The Indians finished the season with a record of 1-17.

Brielle Kendrioski got the win in net for the Indians, while Sara Russo netted the game-winning goal that broke a 2-2 tie. Sarah Ziemba also scored her first goal of the season.

“Leading up to the game, Lauralton Hall had its only win of the year against us, so we knew this was our best chance for a win, so they were super psyched and pumped up going into the game,” said Head Coach Gil Schaper. “I’ve never seen a group of athletes more excited for a win and it was one of my more memorable wins in my time as coach here. I give the girls credit because, even without this win, they would’ve had a great year. They worked hard all year, but this was a huge victory at the end. The girls rushed the ice and jumped on our goalkeeper. It had the feeling of a championship game.”

Boys’ Ice Hockey

Guilford took a pair of defeats but earned a win last week and finished 15-5 on the regular season. The Indians lost to Watertown-Pomperaug by a 4-1 final on Feb. 20 and then dropped a 3-1 decision against Cheshire on Feb. 22. Guilford then blanked Milford 5-0 on Feb. 25.

The Indians next have the SWC/SCC Division II Tournament semifinals on Thursday, March 2. A win there puts Guilford in the final on Saturday, March 4 at Bennett Rink in West Haven at 4 p.m.

Boys’ Basketball

The No. 6 seed Guilford boys’ basketball team hosted No. 11 Fairfield Prep in the first round of the SCC Tournament and took a 55-50 loss on Feb. 23.

Jordan Krause had 16 points to lead the Indians, while Ian Slattery and Matt Donlan each scored 11 points for Guilford against Prep. The Indians, who are now 15-6, are competing in the Class L State Tournament that begins this week.

Boys’ and Girls’ Fencing

Guilford had meets on back-to-back days by Lyme-Old Lyme on Feb. 23 and Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe the following.

Against Lyme-Old Lyme, girls’ foil won 9-0 and épée prevailed, 8-1 for the 17-1 victory. For the boys, foil squeaked out a 5-4 decision, plus épée came out on top by the final of 7-2 for a 12-6 win. Girls’ foil shut out Lyme-Old Lyme with Isabella Nigani and Ella Stanley going 3-0 and Lindsey Smith grabbing one win. Faren Roth shut out her opponents with Alyssa Demaio also posting a victory. Luke McNamara swept his opponents in foil.

The next night was Senior Night and the girls improved to 12-4 as foil (6-3) and sabre (7-2) earned wins, while épée took a 6-3 defeat, for an 16-11 Indians’ victory. The boys stayed undefeated at 16-0 by winning sabre (8-1) and foil (7-2), while losing 6-3 for épée, to take the match by an 18-9 final. Grace Beaty had a clean sweep for girls’ épée by going 3-0. Hank Huhnke and Zac Talbot were 3-0 for boys’ sabre, plus Evens Schultes won all of his matches in foil.

“Senior Night is such a special night for our graduating fencers. This year, we honored our seniors and their parents with speeches from their younger teammates,” said Head Coach Kyle Mezzi. “Heartfelt speeches are made by their fellow fencers as to what their friendship and competitiveness has meant to them these past few years. Our seniors really get a sense of the impact they have made on this team.”
