Rams’ Girls’ Track Takes 3rd at States; Girls’ Hoops Loses in Shoreline Quarters

Girls’ Indoor Track

Led by one individual victory and another from a relay, the Old Saybrook girls’ indoor track team captured a third-place finish at the Class S State Championship. The Rams scored 37 points in the meet, which was held at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 14.

Junior Tyra Finkeldey prevailed in the pole vault by reaching a height of 10 feet-6 inches, defeating Emily Kopec of Stratford, whose height was 9-6. Finkeldey’s victory scored 10 points for the Rams.

Old Saybrook was further spurred by a win from its 4x800 relay. The Rams’ quartet of junior Allison Bruehwiler, freshman Grace Hanratty, senior Jael Givehand, and Jessica Stratton ran a time of 10:11.77 to place ahead of Morgan (10:32.02) and score 10 points. That group had previously won the event at the Shoreline Conference Championship with a 10:12.73.

Also scoring points at the meet was senior Devyn King, who placed fourth in the long jump at 16-5.25 to record four points. Bruehwiler posted a point for Old Saybrook by taking sixth place in the 600-meter run at 1:46.66.

The Rams also received points from their three other relays at the state meet. The 4x200 of King, senior Holly Coppes, Finkeldey, and junior Vyka Stoltz took third place with a 1:53.19 to score six points. The 4x400 unit of King, Finkeldey, freshman Allison Cody, and Bruehwiler claimed fourth and tallied four points by running a time of 4:22.62. The 1,600 sprint medley relay featuring Stoltz, Coppes, Cody, and freshman Grace Hanrartty clocked in at 4:34.91 to finish fifth and score two points.

Additionally, Jessica Stratton finished eighth in the 600 (1:48.99), while Cate Coppes placed eighth in the pole vault at 7 feet. In the 1,000, Hanratty raced to seventh place (3:12.92) and was followed by Givehand (13th, 3:20.85); Ingrid Boland (16th, 3:25.53), Ally Castro (24th, 3:28.69); and Julia Sultini (27th, 3:31.78). Castro also finished ninth for the 1,600 at 6:00.57, plus Tehra Givehand took 10th in the event by a running a 6:02.23.

Rachel Vigorita finished ninth in the high jump by clearing 4-8. Teammates Julia Ludwiszewski and Grace McLaughlin also reached 4-8 to finish in 11th and 16th place, respectively. Annea Thaci took 10th place in the long jump with a leap of 15-5. Isabella Donohue was 13th for the preliminaries of the 55-meter hurdles at 9.58 seconds with Thaci in 16th (9.72). Isabel Reina threw a 28-0.5 to take 18th place in the shot put, while Alyssa Layte finished 24th at 27-6.25.

Boys’ Indoor Track

At last week’s Class S State Championship, the Old Saybrook boys’ indoor track team placed 14th overall by scoring 15 points.

Junior Eric Sultini finished third in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:25.37, scoring six points for the Rams. In the high jump, junior James Vukovinsky cleared a height of 5 feet-8 inches to place third and score six points. He was followed by junior Ryan DuBord, who cleared 5-6 to score two points. The 4x800 relay of freshman Luke Hanratty, junior Xavier Rios, sophomore Lance Sigersmith, and senior Dan Baldi finished sixth with a time of 8:49.58 to score a point for the Rams.

Also at the meet, the 4x400 quartet of Jalen Johnson, Joshua Chang, Rios and Sultini placed seventh with a time of 3:43.26. In the 4x200, Johnson, Ashton Reina, Austin Reynolds, and Max Thomas finished with a time of 1:39.85 to place ninth. For the 1,600 sprint medley, the unit of Thomas, Reynolds, Johnson, and Sigersmith finished with a time of 4:05.40 to place 11th.

Chang finished the 600 with a time of 1:31.31 to place ninth, followed by Hanratty in 15th (1:33.88). In the 1,000, Baldi finished ninth with a time of 2:50.32. In the 55-meter hurdles, DuBord took 11th with a time of 8.69, followed by Vukovinsky in 13th (8.73) and Sebastian Gallitto in 20th (9.53). Reina placed 22nd in the long jump with a distance of 17-11.5, while DuBord finished 24th at 17-6.5.

Girls’ Basketball

After finishing the regular season by beating Old Lyme, the Rams were defeated by Cromwell in the Shoreline Conference Tournament quarterfinals last week. Old Saybrook will next compete in the Class S State Tournament.

On Feb. 13, the Rams posted a 39-26 home win over Old Lyme to conclude the regular season at 11-9. Old Saybrook led 16-5 after the first quarter and held an 18-13 advantage at halftime. The Rams then won the third quarter by an 11-4 margin to bring a 29-17 lead into the final frame. Marissa Newell had a big game for Old Saybrook by netting 25 points. Mandy Beck added 10 points in the victory.

Then on Feb. 18, Old Saybrook opened play in the Shoreline Conference Tournament as the No. 7 seed and took a 76-20 loss at 2nd-seeded Cromwell to drop to 11-10 overall.
