HK Wrestling Boasts Two Class S Champs; Track Teams Post Points at States

Wrestling

The Cougars’ wrestling finished fourth with 168 points at the Class S State Championship at Windham High School on Feb. 17 and 18. Ledyard emerged as the champion by scoring 203.5 points.

Haddam-Killingworth crowned two state champions in Jake Firth, who prevailed in the 138-pound weight class by defeating Tavon Simpson of Notre Dame-Fairfield 9-1 in the final; along with Grayson Adler, who took the 160 crown by besting Ledyard’s Jacob Millbach with a pin at 1:30 into their championship bout.

Also placing in the top six of their respective classes were Matthew Jenkins (2nd, 132), David Wyzykowski (2nd, 182), and Aidan Korper (3rd, 145).

Girls’ Indoor Track

HK finished in 12th place with 12 points at the Class S State Championship at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 14.

Scoring points for HK were Kelsey D’Amico, who was runner-up (5:19.90) in the 1,600-meter run to Emily Sienna of Hale-Ray (5:17.05); along with Julianne Kelly (5th in the 600, 1:44.36); Veronica Chrzanowski (6th in the long jump, 16 feet); plus the 4x400 relay of Maddie Kiely, Andrea Roman, Ashley Duncanson, and Kelly (6th, 4:24.11).

Boys’ Indoor Track

The Cougars scored 5.5 points to finish 22nd at the Class S State Championship last week.

Tallying points on behalf of HK were the 4x800 relay of Kurt Sodergren, Kyle Criscuolo, Carter Murray, and Seth Freeman (4th, 8:45.30); as well as Jonathan Ellery (tied for 6th in the pole vault at 11 feet-6 inches) and Nick Formica (6th in the long jump, 20-2.25).

Boys’ Basketball

The Cougars now stand at 11-8 following a pair of victories in last week’s action. HK beat Morgan 92-68 and then blew out Cromwell by a 77-51 final before a 58-48 loss to Coginchaug on Feb. 18. HK is competing in the Shoreline Conference Tournament that gets underway this week.

Girls’ Basketball

HK earned its fourth win of the season by defeating Morgan 45-35 on Feb. 13. The Cougars then took a 95-36 loss to Cromwell on Feb. 15 to finish the year with a record of 4-16.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Cougars have won five straight contests and evened their mark at 6-6 following a pair of victories last week. HK recorded a 95-86 win over Lyman Hall-Coginchaug on Feb. 15 and then posted a 90-85 victory against North Haven two days later.

Ice Hockey

Lyman Hall/HK/Coginchaug took two of three matchups last week and is now 9-9 on the season. The Trojans have clinched a spot in the Division III State Tournament. Last week, the squad took a 6-2 loss to Branford on Feb. 17, but then came back to post a 9-3 rout of Barlow two days later. They then capped with week with a 5-3 win over Sheehan on Feb. 18.

Gymnastics

HK/Hale-Ray/Morgan took on Mercy and Hand in a tri-meet on Feb. 15. The team scored 102.00 points to drop decisions against both Mercy (137.45) and Hand (128.40).

Erin Figurelli scored a 9.0 on vault, a 9.2 on bars, an 8.6 on beam, and a 9.35 for the floor to net an all-around score of 36.15 at the meet. Figurelli won each competition except for the vault, where she finished second. Haley Smith earned an 8.6 on vault and a 9.05 for the floor on her way to a 33.95 for the all-around.

The Cougars then lost a 126.45-63.35 decision to Valley Regional on Feb. 16.
