Daley Wrestles to 2nd in Class S for Morgan; Girls’ Track Has Great Showing at States

Junior Austin Daley claimed second place in the 285-pound weight class for the Morgan wrestling team at last week’s Class S State Championship. As a squad, the Huskies scored 85 points to place ninth at the meet, which was held at Windham High School on Feb. 17 and 18.

Daley’s road to second saw him earn one win by pin at the 3:02 mark and another via pin fall at 3:38 to advance to the final. In the championship bout, Daley lost a 2-1 decision against Jason Hume from Terryville.

Also at states, senior Ivan Villanueva took fifth place in the 182-pound weight class. Villanueva finished fifth by winning a 1-0 decision over Derby’s Michael Szwaja in his final match.

Morgan also saw a few wrestlers finish in sixth place at the meet. Doing so were junior Trevor Follo in the 113-pound weight class, along with junior Andrew Fortuna at 138 and sophomore Anthony Cimino in the 145 division.

Additionally at the meet, Isaac Eriksen recorded a win by pin in the 160-pound weight class, Kyle Neuman earned a pin fall victory at 195, and Nhu Le posted a victory in the 106 division. Brendan Smith recorded a win by decision in the 152 class. Also competing were Josh Fragola and Frank Jara-Torres in the 120- and 132-pound weight classes, respectively.

Girls’ Indoor Track

Morgan posted several top-five showings to finish in sixth place with 26 points at the Class S State Championship at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 14.

Junior Kate Daley took third place in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:57.44 and she was also fifth for the 1,600 at 5:31.28. Daley scored eight points for Morgan between those two performances. Daley also ran on the second-place 4x800 relay with freshman Maura Kelly, junior Allison Gardner, and sophomore Isabella Ranaudo, which finished with a time of 10:32.02 to score eight points.

Morgan saw two other relays score points at states. The 1,600 sprint medley of sophomore Alyssa LeMay, senior Julia Zirchelbach, junior Courtney Viglione, and Gardner took third at 4:30.34 to score six points. The 4x200 of LeMay, junior Mikayla Mancini, freshman Taylor Wyatt, and Viglione ran a time of 1:54.64 to claim fourth and score four.

Also for the Huskies, their 4x400 relay of Gardner, Viglione, Madison Emmi, and Erin Lindsay finished ninth at 4:32.63. LeMay finished 27th (13-10) in the long jump, while Mancini was 29th (13-3). Ranaudo finished 31st in the 1,000 with a mark of 3:34.41. In the preliminaries of the 55-meter hurdles, Morgan was represented by Alyssa Robinson (11th, 9.53 seconds); Olivia McCary (29th, 10.46); Georgia Nye (31st, 10.48); and Mancini (34th, 14.67).

Boys’ Indoor Track

The Huskies saw their 1,600-sprint medley relay post a fourth-place finish at last week’s Class S State Championship.

Morgan’s quartet of sophomore Ryan Caldwell, seniors Nate Hornyak and Burton Caldwell, and junior Thomas Southwood ran a time of 3:51.37 to take fourth place at states. Their performance scored four points for the Huskies and put them in 23rd place as a team.

Morgan’s 4x800 relay of Justin Mucha, Brett Martin, Chayse Lofgren, and Thomas Southwood finished in seventh place at 9:06.62. The 4x200 of Juan Avila, Jhan Carlos Bermeo, Burton Caldwell, and Ryan Caldwell came in 10th place (1:40.36), while the 4x400 of Hornyak, Anes Gadun, Burton Caldwell, and Thomas Southwood finished 15th (3:53.35).

Avila was eighth in the long jump by reaching 19 feet-8 inches. In the preliminaries of the 55-meter hurdles, Anthony Coretti finished 15th in 8.79 seconds and Gadun was 18th at 8.95. Bryce Thomas placed 25th for the prelims of the 55-meter dash with a 7.01.

Boys’ Basketball

The Huskies picked up their fourth win of the season by posting a 70-60 home victory versus Bullard-Havens Tech on Feb. 16. The team also took defeats to Haddam-Killingworth and Coginchaug and is now 4-14.

Facing Bullard-Havens, Morgan took a 22-12 lead after the first quarter and went on to the victory. Jake Anselmo scored 23 points to lead the Huskies. Patrick Markovics had 13 points, AJ Fritz scored 12, Tyler Newfield had seven points, and John Veneri had six points.

Two days before the victory, Morgan lost 92-68 at Haddam-Killingworth. The Huskies closed the week by taking a 64-49 home loss to Coginchaug on Feb. 17.

Girls’ Basketball

Morgan lost its last two games of the season to finish with a record of 4-16. The Huskies dropped a 45-35 home game against Haddam-Killingworth on Feb. 13 and lost 59-35 at Coginchaug on Feb. 16.

Against H-K, Morgan saw Sydney Chomicz score nine points, while Brianna Navarra and Leah McComiskey netted seven points apiece.

In the Coginchaug game, the Huskies were led by Rebecca Shamp (12 points), Navarra (7), Chomicz (6), and Kylee Clifton (6).

Gymnastics

HK/Hale-Ray/Morgan took on Mercy and Hand in a tri-meet on Feb. 15. The team scored 102.00 points to drop decisions against both Mercy (137.45) and Hand (128.40).

Erin Figurelli scored a 9.0 on vault, a 9.2 on bars, an 8.6 on beam, and a 9.35 for the floor to net an all-around score of 36.15 at the meet. Figurelli won each competition except for the vault, where she finished second. Haley Smith earned an 8.6 on vault and a 9.05 for the floor on her way to a 33.95 for the all-around.

The team then lost a 126.45-63.35 decision to Valley Regional on Feb. 16.
