Westbrook’s Hoops Teams Refuse to Lose

Boys’ Basketball

The Westbrook boys’ basketball squad recorded three more victories last week to run its win streak to 15-straight games and improve to 16-1 this season.

On Feb. 6, the Knights topped Wilcox Tech 84-72 behind a 35-point performance from Liam Bell. Bell also had six rebounds and five assists, while Cory Muckle scored 26 points for Westbrook. This non-conference game was a hard-fought win as the Knights needed to overcome a valiant effort by Wilcox guard DeJuan Ransom, who scored a game-high 36 points. Westbrook committed just seven turnovers and shot 47 percent from the floor in the win. Dave Amendola pulled down 16 rebounds and had four assists to contribute to the victory.

The very next night, Westbrook routed Hale-Ray 78-45. Muckle scored a game-high 26 points in the win. Bell scored 21 while adding seven rebounds and five assists. The Knights used strong defense and solid rebounding to generate early transition offense on their way to the lopsided triumph.

The week concluded for the Knights with a 97-67 victory over Portland on Feb. 10. Westbrook shot 55 percent both from the floor and from beyond the arc, finishing with a total of 25 assists on 37 baskets. Muckle scored 36 points and added five assists, plus Bell scored 29 and dished out five dimes. Amendola scored 12 points, grabbed nine boards, and finished with four assists. Westbrook committed just nine turnovers in the game and got solid contributions from everyone on the floor.

Girls’ Basketball

The Knights went 3-0 again last week to push their win streak to seven games and improve their overall record to 14-4 for the season.

First, the Knights beat Valley Regional 54-41 on Feb. 6. Savannah Marshall led the way with 32 points and 11 rebounds, while Kelly Donlan put up 11 points and seven boards. Adara Bochanis guarded the Knights’ basket with seven blocked shots. Zoe Ehlert added seven points in the win.

The following evening, Westbrook dispatched Hale-Ray by a 58-21 final. Marshall put forth a 32-point night to lead the way for Westbrook. Bochanis scored seven, plus Erin Metcalfe and Callie Newberg both added six. The Knights tallied 17 steals in the game, leading to many offensive opportunities.

Westbrook ended its unblemished week with a 52-28 victory over Portland on Feb. 10. Marshall once again led the way with 21 points and seven assists for the Knights. Bochanis notched a double-double with 14 points, 15 rebounds, and three steals. Ehlert chipped in with seven points for the Knights, who saw Donlan and Biance Ferrucci both score four. Metcalfe played solid defense to help the Knights claim their latest victory.
