Senior Caroline O’Neil claimed first place in both the 55-meter dash and the 300-meter dash to lead Hand girls’ indoor track to a fourth-lace finish at the Class L State Championship at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 11.

O’Neil won the 55 in a time of 7.27 seconds, edging out North Haven’s Erica Marriott, who took second at 7.43. In the 300, O’Neil’s mark of 40.56 was nearly three seconds faster than runner-up Leah Rivers of Wilbur Cross (43.33). O’Neil also won both events at the SCC East Sectional Championship two weeks ago, as well as last year’s state meet.

Elsewhere for the Tigers, Gabrielle Harmon finished fourth in the 300 (43.68), Megan Phillips was sixth in the 1,000-meter run (3:14.67), and the 4x400 relay of Phillips, Harmon, O’Neil, and Abigail Walton placed second (4:13.22) to Windsor (4:12.38).

Girls’ Basketball

The Tigers improved to 15-3 with a 58-29 victory over Lauralton Hall on Feb. 7.

Gabby Egidio led three Tigers in double figures by scoring 14 points. She also had four rebounds and three assists. Gabby Martin racked up 11 points, nine rebounds, four steals, and three assists. Halle Freund added 10 points and seven rebounds in the victory.

Hand jumped out to a quick lead thanks to six points from Freund and four from Egidio. Meanwhile, the Crusaders struggled to keep pace while committing six first quarter turnovers. With Hand leading 16-7 going into the second, Lauralton’s offensive struggles continued as the Crusaders hit just two of 13 shots, upping the Tigers’ lead to 31-12 at the break. Hand showed no signs of letting up in the third by outscoring host Lauralton 17-3 to take a 48-15 lead into the final frame. Lauralton outscored Hand 14-10 in the fourth, but the Tigers still cruised to the win.

“I was very proud of the way our kids played tonight. Lauralton Hall is very well coached and they play extremely hard. I don’t care what their record is. They’re going to come at you for 32 minutes and you need to be prepared,” said Head Coach Tim Tredwell. “We moved the ball very well, we were active defensively, and we played with the level of intensity that we look for. Hopefully, we can sustain this effort and execution as we move towards the postseason.”

Boys’ Basketball

Hand played one game last week and lost by a 47-28 final to North Haven on Feb. 7. The Tigers dropped to 1-16 on the season with the defeat.
