Old Saybrook Boys’ Basketball Grabs Two More Wins; Girls Beat Portland in OT

Boys’ Basketball

The Old Saybrook boys’ basketball team won both of its games last week to improve to 11-5 overall with a record of 11-4 in Shoreline Conference action on the season. The Rams are riding a four-game winning streak heading into the final two weeks of the regular season.

To begin last week, Old Saybrook defeated Portland 64-48 on Feb. 7 as Connel Henderson had 19 points with seven assists for the Rams. Shane Henderson scored 14, while Jake Tully had 13 points and six rebounds. Victor Pascoe recorded a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds, plus Aidan Reid scored four points and had four assists. The Rams shot 21-of-26 from the free throw line in the victory.

Old Saybrook followed up that performance with a 71-68 victory over East Hampton. The teams were tied heading into the final frame and, as the game ca,e down to the wire, Tully (11 points) connected on two big free throws to seal the win. Shane Henderson scored a game-high 24 points for Old Saybrook. Connel Henderson scored 17 and Pascoe added 13.

Girls’ Basketball

The Rams split a pair of matchups last week to move to 11-8 with one game to go in the regular season.

The week started with a 54-49 overtime victory versus Portland at home on Feb. 7. It was a thriller that saw Marissa Newell drop 30 points, which marked a season high for the dynamic guard. Mandy Beck added 15 points as Old Saybrook overcame an early 15-5 deficit to get the win. A solid third quarter pushed the Rams ahead, although a furious comeback by Portland in the final two minutes of regulation forced overtime. The Rams regrouped in the extra frame as Beck hit a key three-pointer, Kirstin King made two pressure-packed free throws, and Newell’s basket served as the final blow.

Old Saybrook then lost to East Hampton 34-20 on Feb. 10. Beck scored six points, Maggie Smith and Riley Roarick each had four, and Newell and Alyssa Parker scored three apiece.
