Guilford stands at 11-2 after recording a 6-3 win over New Milford on Feb. 1 and a 3-1 victory versus New Fairfield-Immaculate three days later.

Against New Milford, the Indians trailed 3-1 with 1:42 left in the second period, but then rattled off five unanswered goals. Jack Ring had a hat trick in the comeback, while Joe Neleber and Rick Sandella also scored for Guilford.

Girls’ Basketball

Guilford took a 56-48 loss to Mercy on Jan. 30 and then improved to 13-5 overall with a mark of 6-2 in Hammonasset Division play with a 54-41 win over Branford on Feb. 3.

Against Mercy, the first half was a feisty defensive struggle with the Tigers clinging to a 23-19 advantage. The third quarter saw Mercy push the lead to 10, but the Indians refused to buckle as Camryn Craig scored five points in the final frame and Amanda King knocked down two from beyond the arc. The Indians got within six, but were unable to complete the comeback, and Mercy hung on for the victory. Craig paced Guilford by scoring 15 points.

Facing Branford, the Indians led 23-19 at halftime. Guilford’s captains stepped up in a big way in the second half. Craig and Izzy Nerney, who had two points between them in the first half, combined for 22 second-half points, including Nerney hitting 5-of-7 from the free throw line in the fourth. Craig also grabbed 16 of her season-high 17 rebounds in the second half. Craig and Molly Linell combined for 11 blocked shots in the game, dominating on the defensive end of the court. Nicole Suchy sparked Guilford by coming off the bench to score eight points, and Julia Hyman was a defensive stalwart by shutting down the Hornets’ high-scoring Adrienne DiGioia in the second half as Head Coach Bob Welsh switched to a box-and-1 defense to contain the Branford senior.

Boys’ and Girls’ Fencing

Guilford hosted the Novice State Tournament on Jan. 28.

Lindsey Smith (foil) and Adella Cho (sabre) placed first in their disciplines for the Indians. The girls swept the sabre competition by taking first, second, third (tied), and fifth place. Guilford also placed first, third (tied) and fifth place in foil to go with a fifth-place finish in épée.

For the boys, Chris DeNegre tied for third in the sabre competition.

“Our students fenced their best with determination and grit and pushed themselves farther than anyone thought they could go,” said Head Coach Kyle Mezzi. “A tournament is a long day of fencing and 15-touch direct elimination bouts are very different than five touch bouts.”
