Girls’ Basketball

Last week was a historic one in more ways than one for the East Haven girls’ basketball team. For one, the Yellowjackets clinched at least a share of the Quinnipiac Division title. On top of that, junior Kylie Schlottman reached a career milestone when she netted her 1,000th career point for the Easties. East Haven split its two contests in last week’s action by winning at home against Hamden and losing to Hillhouse on the road. The team’s record now sits at 14-3 for the season.

Schlottman reached the 1,000-point mark for her career during a 63-51 loss to Hillhouse on Feb. 3. Schlottman finished with 18 points, while Olivia Coyle scored 13 and Alexis Pendziwater added 12. The difference in the game was the second quarter as Hillhouse outscored East Haven 14-3 to come away with the win.

Previously, on Jan. 30, East Haven came away with a 64-53 victory versus Hamden to clinch its share of the Quinnipiac Division crown. Schlottman recorded a double-double with 24 points and 14 rebounds for East Haven. Pendziwater contributed 15 points, plus Haley Capozzo scored 11 points in the victory.

Boys’ Basketball

The Yellowjackets earned their second victory of the season when they defeated Law for the second time this season last week. The win improved the Easties to 2-12 this season.

After beating Law 65-45 on Jan. 9, East Haven topped the Lawmen again, 61-40, on Jan. 30. The win was highlighted by an excellent third quarter where East Haven outscored Law 23-8, extending the lead it built in the first half. Nick Guarino led all scorers with 14 points and Jeremiah Cureton finished with 13. Brandon DePalma and Tristen Punzo added nine apiece to contribute to the win.

In its other games last week, East Haven lost to Wilbur Cross and Shelton. On Feb. 1, Wilbur Cross topped East Haven 101-38.

To close out the week, Shelton edged the Easties 50-46, outscoring the Yellowjackets 19-6 in the game’s final quarter. Guarino led all scorers with 20 points, plus Ed Popolizio chipped in with 10 points.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

East Haven won both of its games last week to improve to 12-1 this season.

On Feb. 1, East Haven hosted a tough, Division I Simsbury squad and came away with a 5-4 victory. It marked the Easties’ third win over a Division I opponent this season, as well as their third win against a top 10 team in the state. Joe Lorello scored twice in the victory, while Nick Capone, Joe Aloi, and Jake Aloi added a goal each. Capone recorded three assists with Jake Aloi and Zach Paquin handing out two each. Joe Aloi, Mike Dogolo, and Matt Latella had one assist each. Matt Twarowski got the start in net and made 35 saves in a winning effort.

The Yellowjackets then went on the road on Feb. 4 and defeated Amity 3-1. Goal scorers in the win were Joe Aloi, Capone, and Chris Teto. Logan Hamilton earned the victory between the pipes.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Wings lost three games last week and are now 6-10-1 on the season. On Feb. 1, the Wings played East Catholic-Glastonbury-South Windsor at Newington Rink and dropped a 2-0 decision. Two days later, they hosted Hand at DiLungo Rink and took a 2-0 defeat. The Wings closed the week with a game at Hamden on Feb. 4 and lost 3-1.

Cheerleading

The Yellowjackets finished in fourth place out of 11 teams in the All-Girl Division of the SCC Championship at Shelton High School on Feb. 4.

East Haven saw senior captain Alexa Battaglino and junior Alexis DeMarco earn All-SCC honors at the meet. Fourth place marks East Haven’s best finish at the SCC Championship and Head Coach Michelle Maru was pleased with her squad’s showing coming off a recent first-place finish. Maru is hoping that East Haven can build on its performance as the team gears up for its next competition, the New England Cheerleaders Association meet, which East Haven hosts.
