Karl Neumann, an instructor at Green Hill Martial Arts in Killingworth, has been awarded the rank of black sash in Jeet Kune Do (JKD), the martial art developed by the famed Bruce Lee. Neumann, a Clinton resident, received the rank from Sifu Raffi Derderian, who heads the Derderian Academy of Martial Arts in Johnston, Rhode Island.

Green Hill has been affiliated with the JKD and Filipino Kali programs of the academy for more than 10 years. Training in JKD for a decade, Neumann is the lead JKD instructor at Green Hill, which also teaches combat Hapkido and youth Hapkido under the International Combat Hapkido Federation. Neumann’s twin sons, both 16, are black belts in youth hapkido and are preparing to test for adult black belt in combat Hapkido.

“I am proud to have Karl Neumann as one of our black sash students,” says Derderian. “He worked hard to earn this achievement and we look forward seeing him grow as a martial artist and instructor.”

Green Hill president Ed Ricciuti echoed Derderian’s praises of Neumann’s accomplishments.

“Attaining the rank of black sash in JKD takes incredible focus, perseverance and physical conditioning,” said Ricciuti, a Killingworth resident. “We expect Karl will bring all that he has learned to the students in our JKD program.”

JKD draws upon the elements of eastern and western fighting arts, including Chinese Wing Chun and Kung Fu, as well as fencing and western boxing. Green Hill JKD is open to males and females who are aged 16 and older. Green Hill Martial Arts is located in the historic old Killingworth Town Hall on the grounds of the Killingworth Congregational Church.
