Boys’ Basketball

The Old Saybrook boys’ basketball squad split a pair of games last week to move to 7-5 and stand just one win away from qualifying for the State Tournament.

On Jan. 24, the Rams defeated East Hampton 61-58 in a tough Shoreline Conference matchup. Jake Tully led the way with 25 points and eight boards, including two big free throws with less than 10 seconds left in the game to put the Rams up by three. The free throw line was friendly for the Rams as the team finished a perfect 12-of-12 from the stripe. Connel Henderson had 13 points and six assists, while Shane Henderson scored 14 points for Old Saybrook in the victory. Victor Pascoe contributed five points and eight rebounds.

On Jan. 27, Old Saybrook took a 71-64 loss against Cromwell.

Girls’ Basketball

The Rams lost to the top two teams in the Shoreline Conference last week, putting their overall record at 8-6 for the season.

On Jan. 24 at home, Old Saybrook lost to East Hampton 29-24. The Rams played great defense by holding East Hampton to 11 points in the second half as they rallied from a 15-point deficit to take a small lead into the fourth quarter. The game was decided in the last 50 seconds, when East Hampton connected on 4-of-6 from the free throw line to hold off the Rams. Molly Beck scored 13 points in the loss, while Kirsten King turned in an outstanding performance with eight rebounds and five steals. Head Coach Steve Woods said that Alyssa Parker also played good game with a pair of drives to the basket late in the third quarter and early in the fourth to go with her two steals and four rebounds.

Three days later, Old Saybrook traveled to Cromwell and took a 65-39 defeat. Cromwell controlled the game from the beginning, although King made steals on four consecutive possessions that led to eight points for the Rams to cut Cromwell’s early lead to eight. However, Cromwell answered with a pair of triples and went on to get the victory. Coach Woods said that the Rams never gave up in the game and proved they could play with the Shoreline’s best teams. Beck had 10 points and five steals, plus King finished with eight points, six steals, and five rebounds for Old Saybrook. Marissa Newell chipped in with four points, five steals, and six assists.
