Boys’ Basketball

The Guilford boys’ basketball team prevailed in all three of its games last week, while clinching a State Tournament berth in the process. The Indians defeated East Haven 53-40 on Jan. 23, qualified for states by taking down Masuk 51-43 on Jan. 26, and then posted 76-50 victory over Law on Jan. 27. Head Coach Jeff DeMaio’s squad now owns a record of 9-3 on the season.

Girls’ Basketball

The Indians improved to 12-4 for the year by netting a trio of victories in last week’s action. Guilford recorded a 61-51 win over Lyman Hall on Jan. 23, defeated Amity 56-27 on Jan. 25 to move to 5-1 in SCC Hammonasset Division play, and then notched a 63-33 victory over Foran on Jan. 27.

Against Lyman Hall, Izzy Nerney led all scorers with 20 points, with 15 of them coming in the decisive fourth quarter. Nerney shot 6-of-6 from the foul line in the frame. Amanda King and Janie Danaher chipped in 10 and 8 points, respectively, for the Indians, who went 16-of-22 from the charity stripe.

Facing Amity, the Indians wasted no time building an early 26-11 lead, and they carried a 12-point advantage into halftime. In the third period, Guilford employed a stifling zone defense that kept Amity from scoring in the quarter. Nerney continued her hot shooting by draining five three-pointers and finishing with a game-high 22 points. Danaher added eight points in the winning effort.

Guilford played a sluggish first half versus Foran and struggled from three-point range by going 1-of-13. Behind a charged-up home crowd, the Indians put on an impressive display of ball movement and shot making in the third quarter, outscoring the Lions 24-7. Julia Hyman and Nicole Suchy came off the bench to spark Guilford with 13 points and 10 points, respectively. The Indians’ defense shut down Foran as Hyman, King, and Molly Linell combined for 10 steals.

Camryn Craig added nine points and snared eight rebounds. Nerney scored eight to give her 50 points in a memorable week for the senior captain.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The Indians routed Bolton-Coventry-Rockville (B-C-R) by 11-2 score on Jan. 25 to make states by achieving their eighth victory, and then moved to 9-2 by beating Amity 3-1 on Jan. 28.

Against B-C-R, Guilford’s goals came from John Delucia (3), Jack Ring (2), Austin Booth (2), Cam Bagnall (2), Jack Dacey, and Jake Watrous. Recording assists were Ricky Sandella (4), Ring (2), Delucia (2), Watrous (2), Dacey (2), Jack Kane (2), Bagnall, Nick DiRaffaele, and James Petritz. Guilford outshot B-C-R 36-17 with Kyle Dwyer (12 saves), Luke Faulkner Filosa (3 stops), and Kieran Dall (2 saves) sharing the goaltending duties for the Indians.

Three days later, Delucia recorded a pair of scores when the Indians toppled Amity 3-1.

Guilford was on the ice for a pair of contests last week. The Indians took a 10-6 loss to Trumbull-St. Joseph on Jan. 25 and lost 8-2 against Notre Dame-Fairfield/Foran on Jan. 28.
