Easties’ Wrestling Pins Amity; Boys’ Hockey Takes First Loss

Wrestling

The East Haven wrestling team recorded a 57-19 home victory versus SCC foe Amity on Jan. 24 to improve its record to 12-6 for the season.

East Haven’s wins in the match included Antonio Lieto with a pin at the 1:30 mark in the 113-pound weight class; as well as Joe Milano (120-pound weight class, pin at 0:36); Alex Tapia (138, 1:04) Danny Jarrin (152, 2:20) Sebastian Montoya (160, 5:13); Damien Benway (170, 1:49); and Justin Fonacier (220, 1:27). East Haven’s lone win by decision came courtesy of Victor Garcia, who won by a 9-5 final at 106. The Yellowjackets saw also wins by forfeit from Charles Carrera (182) and Josh Rao (195). Other wrestlers that took part in the matchup were Alec DiVito (126), Nick DeMorro (132), Vincent Franco (145), and Brandon Duryea (285).

During the previous week, East Haven defeated Cheshire 66-12 and then took fourth place in the Morgan Duals by beating Stratford 66-9 and Griswold 60-22, while also losing to Middletown 54-22 and Montville 41-34.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

After winning one game last week, East Haven took its first loss of the season to move to 9-1 on the year.

On Jan. 25, East Haven topped Watertown-Pomperaug 4-1. Zach Paquin and Joe Aloi each had a goal with an assist, and Chris Teto and Mike Dogolo both scored once for East Haven. Nick Capone and Jake Aloi recorded two assists apiece, while Logan Hamilton made 24 saves in goal to secure the victory.

On Jan. 28, Farmington Valley handed the Yellowjackets their first defeat by an 8-4 final. Capone recorded a hat trick and Matt Latella scored the other goal for East Haven. Jake Aloi had two assists for the Yellowjackets, who saw Matt Twarowski and Hamilton both play goal in the loss.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

Branford-East Haven-North Branford played four recent games and came away with a pair of victories to move to 6-7-1 on the season. The Wings notched an 8-1 home win against Lauralton Hall at DiLungo Rink in Jan. 21, lost 2-0 to West Haven-Sacred Heart Academy at Bennett Rink on Jan. 24, posted a 2-0 victory versus Hand at Northford Ice Pavilion on Jan. 26, and then wrapped up the week by losing 1-0 against Simsbury at home on Jan. 28.

Girls’ Basketball

The Yellowjackets split their two games last week to stand at 13-2 this season.

The week started with a surprising 48-43 loss to Sheehan on Jan. 25. Sheehan stormed out of the gate with 20 first quarter points and held off the Yellowjackets throughout the rest of the game. Olivia Coyle led the Easties with 15 points, Kylie Schlottman scored 14, and Alexis Pendziwater added nine.

East Haven rebounded with a 63-52 victory over Amity on Jan. 27. The game was even through the first half, but the Yellowjackets came out on fire in the third quarter, and pushed themselves to an 11-point lead. Coyle delivered 17 points and Schlottman added 16 in the victory. Haley Capozzo contributed 12 points for East Haven, plus Isabella Ragaini and Pendziwater scored six points each.

Boys’ Basketball

East Haven lost both of its games last week and dropped to 1-10 for the season.

The week started on Jan. 23, when Guilford defeated East Haven 53-40. The Yellowjackets struggled in the second quarter as Guilford built an 11-point lead entering the half on its way to the win. Ryan Spano led the Yellowjackets with 10 points, while Ed Popolizio and Nick Guarino added nine points each. Brandon DePalma scored seven points and Jeremiah Cureton had five in the loss.

On Jan. 27, the Yellowjackets lost a close one to Lyman Hall, 46-41. DePalma and Popolizio scored 12 points each with Cureton scoring six and Guarino adding five. The fourth quarter proved the difference as the Trojans outscored the Yellowjackets by seven to pull off the win.
