Boys’ and Girls’ Indoor Track

The Huskies’ indoor track program took part in the Haddam-Killingworth Invitational at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on Jan. 20. The girls’ team tied for fifth place with Plainfield, while the boys finished tied for 11th with Prince Tech and Tolland.

For the Morgan boys, the 1,600 sprint medley relay (SMR) team of Thomas Southwood, Burton Caldwell, Ryan Caldwell, and Nate Hornyak took first place in the race with a time of 3:55.64, edging out runner-up Tolland (3:55.91). The boys’ 4x200 relay of Juan Avila, Jhan Carlos Bermeo, Burton Caldwell, and Ryan Caldwell came in third place at 1:40.73.

Also, the Huskies’ girls’ 4x800 relay of Allison Gardner, Isabella Ranaudo, Kate Daley, and Madison Emmi was fourth (10:38.43); Alyssa Robinson finished fifth in the 55-meter hurdles in 9.48 seconds; Taylor Wyatt placed fifth in the 55-meter dash (7.80); the SMR of Julia Zirchelbach, Madeline Stopkoski, Courtney Viglione, and Gardner took fourth place (4:38.73); and the 4x400 of Zirchelbach, Viglione, Emmi, and Erin Lindsay raced to fourth behind a mark of 4:42.04.

Girls’ Basketball

Morgan is now 3-11 after losing 55-21 to Coginchaug and 37-30 against Westbrook in last week’s action. In the previous week, the Huskies posted a 71-10 rout of Hale-Ray before taking a 45-42 loss to Old Saybrook.

Versus Hale-Ray, the Huskies came out fresh and revived in the first quarter as they looked to press Hale-Ray with stifling defense. Hale-Ray struggled to handle the quick and smart play of the Huskies and the Noises were outscored 16-2 in the opening quarter. The first half ended with Morgan holding a 28-3 lead and the Huskies continued to roll through the remainder of the game.

Sydney Chomicz had 22 points, Rebecca Shamp had 12, and Shannon Maher scored 10 for the Huskies. Kate Driscoll, Brianna Navarra, and Kylee Clifton each chipped in six points. Additionally, Navarra and Clifton had 11 steals between them.

“I pulled my starters fairly early in the third quarter and every kid that went in didn’t miss a beat,” said Head Coach Caitlin Woods. “The younger athletes are really starting to play well and I am really excited about their continued progress and improvement.”

Facing Old Saybrook, Morgan came out incredibly strong as it shut down the Rams in the first quarter and led 16-5. The Huskies were up 28-18 at halftime and, despite being outscored 12-6 in the third quarter, still held a four-point advantage entering the fourth. The fourth quarter was a different scenario, however, as the Rams continued to battle and eventually pulled away with the lead in the end. Shamp (13), Navarra (11), and Chomicz (10) were the Huskies’ leading scorers.

“I felt like we had just lost a crushing state championship game. We had prepared so well for Old Saybrook and I believe that my team is getting to the point where they are capable of beating anyone,” said Woods, who coached against her father and Rams’ Head Coach Steve Woods in this contest. “Saybrook is strong and they have been playing together as a team for much longer than my kids and, in the end, they outplayed and outhustled us.”

Boys’ Basketball

The Huskies took a 56-31 defeat to Coginchaug on Jan. 24. Two nights later, Morgan lost by a 70-43 final against Westbrook to go to 2-8 on the season.
