Warriors Grind Out a Win Against North Branford

Boys’ Basketball

The Warriors’ boys’ basketball squad was on the road for two games last week and split to pair to move to 5-6 on the year. Valley Regional took a 67-51 loss in Old Lyme on Jan. 17 and then bounced back with a 44-39 win at North Branford on Jan. 20.

Against Old Lyme, Valley held a 20-17 lead after the first quarter and the game was tied 31-31 at halftime. However, the Wildcats outscored Valley 20-6 in the third quarter and that proved the difference in the 16-point victory. Senior Jordan Moran scored 16 points, while juniors Colin Sparaco and Ben Weinstein both tallied 14 points for the Warriors. Weinstein had a big night on the boards by gathering 12 rebounds for Valley. Also contributing on the glass were senior Ryan Kelly (8 rebounds), junior Ernest Jean-Pierre (6), and Sparaco (6). Moran, Kelly, and Sparaco also grabbed two steals apiece for Head Coach Kevin Woods’s squad.

Three nights later, Valley Regional and North Branford were tied at 9 following the first quarter and then the T-Birds won the second quarter 10-7 to bring a three-point lead to intermission. The Warriors’ defense clamped down in the third quarter by holding North Branford to just seven points, while the offense scored 13, to give Valley a 29-26 edge through three. Valley held off North Branford by winning the final quarter 15-13 to solidify the 44-39 victory.

Moran scored 12 points to lead a balanced effort for the Warriors. Junior Brian Tonks had nine points, plus Jean-Pierre, Sparaco, and Weinstein all scored seven points. Sparaco and Weinstein additionally contributed seven rebounds apiece in the win, while Jean-Pierre came up with a pair of steals.

Gymnastics

Valley Regional traveled to Jonathan Law High School in Milford for a matchup against two schools from the Southern Connecticut Conference last week. The Warriors posted a score of 120.7 points and dropped decisions against Mercy (131.35) and host Law (123.35).
