The Haddam-Killingworth wrestling squad won the Griswold Mid-season Invitational for the first time by outscoring runner-up South Kingston, Rhode Island, 200-177, on Jan. 14. Medaling for the Cougars were first-place finishers Grayson Adler (160-pound weight class), Matt Jenkins (132), and Malakai Maher (120); second-place competitors Wyatt Wright (106), Zach Wyzykowski (126), Jake Firth (138), and David Wyzykowski (182); plus third-place grappler Aidan Korper (152).
At the Guilford Duals on Jan. 21, the Cougars were the runner-up to Trumbull. HK defeated Bunnell (73-12), Darien (72-6), New Fairfield (59-24), and Guilford (41-24), and also lost to Trumbull (53-15).
Boys’ Basketball
The Cougars’ boys’ basketball team played two games last week and split the pair to stand one win shy of making states with a record of 7-4.
On Jan. 17, HK dispatched Coginchaug by the score of 67-37. Three nights, later, the Cougars were edged out by East Hampton, 61-59, in another Shoreline Conference contest.
Girls’ Basketball
In last week’s action, HK took a 57-36 loss to Coginchaug on Jan. 17, lost 44-28 against East Hampton on Jan. 20, and then dropped a 51-29 contest versus Valley Regional the following afternoon. The Cougars are now 2-9 on the season.
Ice Hockey
Lyman Hall/HK/Coginchaug defeated Milford 6-3 on Jan. 17, after which the Trojans lost their next two contests against Housatonic-Northwestern (5-3) and Sheehan (2-1 in overtime). The team now owns a mark of 3-5 on the year.
Against Milford, Connor Satton notched the first goal with 9:59 remaining in the opening period. Milford held a 2-1 lead heading to the second until Jack O’Brien knotted the game at 2 by scoring with 13:31 left in the frame. With his team down a goal, Chris Blanchard tied it again, 3-3, by scoring with 7:07 left before the second intermission. Satton then gave the Trojans the lead by converting a goal just 28 ticks before the break. Blanchard added to the lead by scoring with 12 minutes remaining in the contest, after which Scott Bradley notched the final score with eight seconds to go. The Trojans outshot the Indians 42-20.
