Girls’ Basketball

The Guilford girls’ basketball team punched its ticket into the State Tournament by posting a 55-46 win over Sacred Heart Academy on Jan. 17. The Indians then raced past Shelton 63-40 on Jan. 20 to move to 9-4 overall. Guilford is also 4-1 in the SCC Hammonasset Division.

Against Sacred Heart Academy, the Indians featured a balanced scoring attack with Izzy Nerney scoring 11 points, Janie Danaher and Amanda King each tallying 10 points, and Kayley McLaughlin netting eight points. Camryn Craig had six points, plus a season-high 13 rebounds with five blocked shots.

“In our opening game against SHA back in December, we went to the free throw line nine times. I challenged the girls to attack the basket and get to the line and they responded in a big way with 35 attempts from the line, converting on a respectable 68 percent,” said Head Coach Bob Welsh.

In the Shelton win, Guilford struggled on its shooting from the inside during the first six minutes of the game and held a slim 7-5 lead. Then something clicked for the Indians, who ran off nine straight points, including a Nerney buzzer-beater, to take a 16-5 lead. Craig turned in a dominant second quarter by scoring 12 of her 18 points in the period. McLaughlin scored on an offensive put-back at the buzzer to give the Indians a 33-19 lead at the half.

Guilford opened the second half on a 7-2 run as McLaughlin hit a three and then King caught fire by netting 12 points in the quarter to put the game out of reach. King was the game’s leading scorer with 19 points, while Craig dominated the stat sheet with 18 points, 11 rebounds, seven steals, and three blocked shots.

“Our team is really beginning to mesh and getting scoring punch from a number of different players each night,” said Welsh on his team, which is averaging 53 points a game.
