Guilford lost a Hammonasset Division contest to Mercy by a 73-57 score on Jan. 9. The Indians then improved to 3-1 in division action after a 46-34 decision over Branford on Jan. 12.

In their first game of the week, the Indians played an outstanding second half where they outscored Mercy 36-33 in the defeat. Amanda King led the scoring with 16 points, with all of them coming in a second-half scoring explosion that included four three-point baskets. Against Branford, Guilford prevailed for its fifth win in its last six outings. Branford was stubborn and refused to go away. On Jan. 14, Bloss continued her strong weekend as she won the 3,200 at the Elm City Relays makeup in a time of 11:28.78. Both times marked personal records for the rising sophomore.

On the boys’ side, Corey Sondak finished fourth in the 55 dash in a personal-best time of 6.87 on Jan. 13. Also doing well that day was the 4x200 relay, led by Sam Sessions, Sondak, Caleb Benedict, and Jordan Lembo Frey in an impressive time and season best of 1:38.59. Sessions had a good week as, on Jan. 9, he lowered his time in the 300 to 38.45 at the SCC Developmental Meet. Additionally, Jalynn McCown took second at Wesleyan in the shot put in a throw of 32 feet-11.5 inches. Rounding out the performances from Wesleyan was the girls’ 4x800 relay of Jacqui Guerra, Andrea Basilicato, Kelsi Putnam, and Eleanor Wiesler, who took second in a time of 10:31.

Boys’ and Girls’ Fencing

Guilford had a matchup against Morgan on Jan. 10. In the boys’ competition, foil won 9-0, épée won 7-2, and sabre prevailed 8-1 for a 24-3 victory for the Indians, who improved to 8-0. The girls took losses in foil (6-3) and sabre (5-4), but prevailed 5-4 in épée. Morgan won the overall contest, 15-12, to move to girls’ record to 5-3.

In boys’ foil, Brenden Balestracci, Joren Nelson, and Evens Schultes won all three matches against their opponents. Boys’ épée received perfect days from Oscar Scott and Remy Lepeak, while Hank Huhnke and Zak Talbot did the same for the sabre squad. Faren Roth had a 3-0 day for the girls’ team.

“Fencing [Morgan] is always an enjoyable meet for both the athletes and the coaches. The athletes fence the full three weapons for both boys’ and girls’ varsity, but also the full three weapons for both boys and girls for the JV squads,” said Head Coach Kyle Mezzi. “For many of our first-year fencers, this was their first big competition. For the coaches Jim Barnett, Kyle Mezzi, and Chris Balestracci, it is a great meet as all three began their fencing careers at Guilford High School.”
