Boys’ Basketball

The Rams’ boys’ basketball team went on the road and won both of its games last week to improve to 5-4 this season.

On Jan. 10, Old Saybrook topped Coginchaug 50-35 behind a solid outing by Shane Henderson, who led all scorers with 16 points. Connel Henderson scored 15 and added eight assists for the Rams. Jake Tully contributed seven points and six boards, while Victor Pascoe scored five and grabbed 12 rebounds for Old Saybrook.

The Rams followed up that win by routing Hale-Ray 75-46 on Jan. 13. Connel Henderson scored game-high 22 points, 18 of which came courtesy of the three ball. He also dished out eight assists. Shane Henderson scored 14 points, while Aiden Reed scored eight and contributed six assists for Old Saybrook. Also, Tully and Pascoe combined for 25 points and 13 rebounds.

Girls’ Basketball

The Rams split their two games last week to move to 7-4 for the season. Old Saybrook is one win away from qualifying for both the Shoreline Conference and State tournaments.

Old Saybrook lost to Coginchaug by a 47-36 score on Jan. 10. The Rams started the game fairly well, but went cold in the second quarter, and trailed by nine at the half. The scoring struggles continued throughout the third quarter as the deficit grew to 22 points going into the final frame. Old Saybrook refused to quit and used a stifling press to cut the lead to seven, but the Blue Devils did enough to hold off the Rams and get the victory. Marissa Newell led the Rams with 14 points, while Sophie Alden and Mandy Beck scored eight each. Kirsten King and Alden combined for 10 rebounds, plus Beck had five assists and five steals.

Old Saybrook bounced back on Jan. 13 by overpowering Hale-Ray 53-20. Newell scored 16 and Beck added 13 on a night where every Old Saybrook player saw considerable playing time. King had eight points to go with her eight rebounds, and Alden continued her outstanding all-around play. Head Coach Steve Woods said that Riley Roarick continued her excellent play, as well.
