The East Haven boys’ ice hockey team won two recent games to push its record to 7-0 as Head Coach Lou Pane moved into second place on the all-time wins list for Connecticut high school hockey coaches with 410.
On Jan. 11, the Yellowjackets topped Hand 8-3 to give Pane win No. 409, tying him with Art Crouse, who coached at West Haven. Nick Capone scored four goals, while Mike Dogolo scored twice and Jake Aloi and Joe Consiglio found the back of the net once for East Haven. Joe Aloi and Zach Paquin recorded three assists apiece, plus Matt Twarowski made 23 saves in goal in the win.
Pane then moved into sole possession of second place on the wins list with his 410th when the Easties defeated Guilford 9-2 at DiLungo Rink on Jan. 14. Jake Aloi, Joe Lorello, and Chris Teto each scored twice, while Consiglio, Joe Aloi, and Dogolo all netted a goal each. Twarowski earned the win in goal and eight different Yellowjackets recorded an assist in the victory.
Boys’ Basketball
The East Haven boys’ basketball squad claimed its first victory of the season last week. Against Law on Jan. 9, the Yellowjackets won in convincing fashion by a 65-45 score.
In the victory, the ball was spread around as nine different Easties scored and three finished in double figures. Eight three-point baskets by the Yellowjackets also contributed to the win. Ed Popolizio led all scorers with 17 points, plus Nick Guarino scored 13 and Jeremiah Cureton contributed 11.
On Jan. 11, East Haven faced Wilbur Cross and lost 59-48. The two teams played basket for basket in the first, third, and fourth quarters, but Cross edged East Haven by 11 points in the second, and that proved to be the difference. Popolizio scored a game-high 24 points as he dominated inside by hitting 11 field goals. Cureton added 10 points in the loss.
East Haven then dropped a 68-59 overtime contest against Shelton on Jan. 13. Popolizio again had the hot hand for East Haven by pouring in 28 points. The two teams were even at 57 heading into the extra frame, but East Haven scored just two points in the extra five-minute session, and came away with the defeat to drop to 1-6.
Girls’ Basketball
The Yellowjackets won a pair of a games against tough opponents last week to improve to 10-1 this season.
On Jan. 9, East Haven triumphed over Hamden 59-43. The three ball was working for Alexis Pendziwater, who connected on four triples to contribute 14 points off the bench. Kylie Schlottman scored a game-high 16, while Olivia Coyle added 14 in the win.
East Haven hit the floor again on Jan. 13 against Hillhouse and claimed a 63-50 victory. Schlottman controlled the post with 23 points for the Yellowjackets. Coyle netted 18 points and Pendziwater pitched in with 10.
Wrestling
On Jan. 10, East Haven hosted Fairfield Prep and came out of the bout with a 49-20 victory.
Victories by pin were earned by Sebastian Montoya in the 160-pound weight class at 3:13, plus Justin Fonacier in the 220-pound division at 4:32. Victories by decision came courtesy of Victor Garcia (106, 8-3); Antonio Lieto (113, 12-2), Alex Tapia (132, 8-2); and Nick DeMorro (138, 10-7). East Haven also saw four victories by forfeit with Brandon Duryea (285), Connor Gontarz (145), Charles Carrera (182), and Josh Rao (195) getting those wins. Other wrestlers in the match for the Yellowjackets were Tanner DiVito (120), Alec DiVito (126), Danny Jarrin (152), and Damien Benway (170).
Head Coach Lou Rivellini said that all of East Haven’s wrestlers are stepping up and performing at a high level this year. East Haven has put together a stellar season thus far and is receiving votes in the State Coaches Poll.
