Girls’ Basketball

Old Saybrook stayed hot to ring in the new year and recorded two more wins to stand at 6-3 for the season.

On Dec. 30, the Rams traveled to Portland and earned a 43-37 victory in a tight battle with the Highlanders. Mandy Beck led the way with 16 points and four assists, while Marissa Newell had 14 points and five steals. Junior forward Alyssa Parker chipped in with 10 points. Old Saybrook trailed by a point at halftime, but turned in an outstanding third quarter that they won 12-3. The team then held on in the fourth for the win.

The Rams went back on the road on Jan. 3 and defeated a scrappy Creed squad by a 44-30 score. Newell and Beck each scored 15 points and Kirsten King chipped in eight. All of King’s points came in the third quarter and then Beck netted 10 in the fourth.

The Rams’ winning streak was snapped on Jan. 6 as rival Westbrook defeated Old Saybrook 41-30 on Jan. 6. Old Saybrook got out to a slow start and trailed 9-2 at the end of the first quarter. King, Sophie Alden, and Beck were all in early foul trouble, but the Rams received big contributions off the bench from senior Riley Roarick and junior Grace Nobile. Old Saybrook pulled within two points at the half and narrowed it to within one at the end of the third, however, Westbrook converted enough free throws to secure the win. Newell continued her scoring prowess and strong defensive play with 12 points and nine steals. Alyssa Parker had five points and seven rebounds, plus King had five rebounds and five steals. Roarick added five boards for Old Saybrook.
