North Haven Girls’ Track Takes 2nd at Hillhouse Relays; Blades Stand at 6-3

Girls’ Indoor Track

The North Haven girls’ indoor track squad competed at the Hillhouse Winter Relays at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Dec. 30 and scored 30.50 points to finish in second place. The Indians only placed behind Shelton, which had 41 points.

At the meet, sophomore Erica Marriott captured first place in the long jump relay with a leap of 16 feet-4.5 inches. The Indians’ high jump relay took first with a combined distance of 12 feet-8 inches behind Katie Rogers (4-4), Julie Mappa (4-4), and Emily Camera (4-0). North Haven’s shot put relay of Sarah Vanacore (37-3), Kayla Rodriguez (28-8.25), and Sarah Bouffard (28-6.5) took second place with a distance of 94-5.75.

On Jan. 4, North Haven competed at an SCC Developmental meet at the same site. Marriott won the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.35 seconds, senior Elise Symon raced to third place in the 1,600-meter run (5:25.53), and Vanacore was third in the shot put (36-11.5) for the Indians, who are coached by Marc Celmer.

Boys’ Indoor Track

The Indians recently participated in the Hillhouse Winter Relays and scored 13 points to finish in 11th place.

Head Coach Marc Celmer’s squad was led by its shot put relay, which took third place with a distance of 114 feet-11.25 inches. The performances of Eric Milliard (40-8), Carson Tebbetts (39-8), and Nelson Espada (34-7.25) led North Haven to its third-place finish. Also, the Indians’ duo of Josh Bryson and Robert Farley joined forces in the 55-meter shuttle hurdle and recorded a time of 18.31 seconds, which was good for third place.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Amity-North Haven-Cheshire girls’ ice hockey team split its last two games to move to 6-3 for the winter campaign. First, the Blades edged out Notre Dame-Fairfield/Foran by a 3-2 margin on Jan. 4 at Milford Ice Pavilion. Two days later, the Blades hosted Hand at The Rinks at Shelton lost by a 3-2 final in overtime.

Against Hand, the Blades rallied from a two-goal deficit in the third period to force overtime, where the Tigers won it by scoring with four minutes remaining. Sophomore Shannon Reilly had an assist for the Blades.

Boys’ Basketball

North Haven has dropped its last three contests and now stands with a record of 2-3 on the season. Two days after beating Branford in its first game of the North Haven Holiday Tournament, the Indians took a 78-53 loss to non-conference squad Rocky Hill in the final on Dec. 29. In last week’s action, North Haven lost at Foran by a 71-58 final on Jan. 4 and then lost 62-58 at home against Shelton two nights later.

Jack Steinman scored 19 points to lead the Indians in the Rocky Hill contest. Mike Gagliardi had nine points, while Preston Young added eight for North Haven.

Against Foran, Steinman and Ethan Okwuosa both scored 14 points and Jarrod Sancho had six points for Head Coach Justin Falcon’s club.

In the Shelton game, Steinman (14 points), Myjak (14), Young (11), Sancho (9), and Tom Dodge (8) filled up the scoring column for the Indians.

Girls’ Basketball

The Indians have taken defeats in their four most recent games and are now 1-6 this year.

After getting their first win of the season against Two Rives in the North Haven Holiday Tournament, North Haven lost to non-conference opponent Greenwich 58-33 in the championship game on Dec. 29. Last week, the Indians lost at Branford (60-40) on Jan. 3, at home versus Guilford (68-24) the next night, and in West Haven (63-32) on Jan. 6.

In the Branford contest, Leah Zeisner’s 11-point performance led the Indians. Ariana DelVecchio scored seven points and Zoi Burns had six points for Head Coach Ray Degnan’s team.

Zeisner scored seven points for North Haven versus Guilford.

Against West Haven, Julissa Maldonado scored 14 points, while DelVecchio had eight points and Zeisner scored seven.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

North Haven has had two meets thus far this season, taking a 96-85 loss to Hand on Dec. 19 and a 96-68 defeat in Shelton on Jan. 6. The Indians feature 11 swimmers and one diver on their roster this year.

In terms of the Indians’ best times between these two meets, sophomore JP Stoeffler swam a 2:18.12 in the 200 individual medley, a 5:19.02 in the 500 freestyle, a 24.60 for the 50 freestyle, and a 53.88 in the 100 free. Other great showings were turned in by freshman Carlo Frunzio in the 200 free (2:09.76), the 200 IM (2:24.37), and the 100 breaststroke (1:14.76); junior Albi Koleci in the 200 freestyle (lifetime best of 2:14.84) and 100 butterfly (1:09.78), sophomore Kevin Powers in the 200 IM (2:31.81) and 100 fly (lifetime best of 1:07.17); junior Marcus Zikaras in the 200 free (lifetime best of 2:22.23); and junior Ryan Tanguay for the 100 free (lifetime best of 58.24) and the 50 free (24.82).

Other solid performances came from junior Riley Powell in the 100 free (lifetime best of 57.64) and the breaststroke (1:14.79); sophomore Tommy O’Connor in the 500 free (lifetime best of 6:39.29) and the 50 free (27.27); senior Jack Hildebrandt for the 50 free (26.20) and the 100 backstroke (1:12.30); sophomore Will McCleery in the 100 free (lifetime best of 55.91), 200 free (2:02.25), and 500 free (5:22.91); plus freshman Stephen Borrelli in the 50 free (lifetime best of 31.21), 100 free (1:11.95), and the breaststroke (1:40.30). Additionally, senior dive Kyle Duby posted a season-best, six-dive total of 197.20 points.

“This is a growing program,” said Head Coach Martha Phelan. “I am thrilled with the team’s progress early in our dual-meet season. Returning swimmers are improving, along with the influx of freshman.”
