Boys’ Ice Hockey

The Indians’ boys’ ice hockey squad opened its year with a 4-1 home win over North Branford at DiLungo Rink in East Haven on Dec. 20. Guilford outshot the T-Birds 41-30 and the team’s goals were scored by Ricky Sandella, Jack Dacey, Joey Neleber, and John Delucia. Kyle Dwyer made 28 saves for the Indians. Delucia had two assists, while Dacey, Jacob Neubig, and Cam Bagnall each added a helper for Guilford. Ralph Russo is back for another season behind the bench as the Indians’ head coach.

“We had a lot of positive play in all aspects of our game after struggling in all aspects of our game in our last preseason scrimmages,” Coach Russo said. “Kyle Dwyer saw the puck well, played with poise, and made the important saves. Our defense played strong in front of him. We were able to limit rebound attempts for most of the game, with the exception of a span at the end of the second period and beginning of the third period. Our offense did exactly what you want them to do by going out and generating scoring chances immediately. It took most of the first period before we got our first goal, but we generated opportunities from the start of the game.”

North Branford is always a quality team and we needed to play the way we did to night to have a chance to win,” Russo continued. “It is a nice team win to start the season. It was great to see our returning players lead the way to set the tone. Kyle Dwyer, Ricky Sandella, John Delucia, Jake Watrous, Joe Neleber, and Tom Cattaneo had a strong performance. We leaned on them tonight to match up with their veteran players and they were up for the task. As we move forward, I expect to see some of our younger and new players contributing more and more. We had nice efforts tonight from freshman Jack Dacey [who scored his first goal], EJ Vickerman, and Jack Kane. Sophomore Cam Bagnall played well at defense.”

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Indians took a 10-1 loss to Amity-North Haven-Cheshire at Ingalls Rink in New Haven on Dec. 27.

Previously, Guilford dropped a 7-1 contest to Masuk-Barlow-Newtown-Oxford on Dec. 21 and then lost 4-1 to Lauralton Hall on Dec. 23.

Wrestling

Guilford handily defeated Cheshire by a 66-10 margin on Dec. 21. Previously, Guilford routed North Haven 61-33 on Dec. 20 and then lost 56-34 to Hand on Dec. 22.

Boys’ and Girls’ Fencing

Guilford traveled with its varsity and JV teams to fence against Morgan on Dec. 16. The varsity boys prevailed over Morgan with a 23-4 win and the girls came out on top with a 17-10 win. The girls’ JV team fought a tough battle, but lost 5-4 in foil and 5-3 in sabre.

The Indians then faced North Haven at home on Dec. 19. Guilford won both the boys’ and girls’ team competitions by finals of 15-12. The Indians lost in boys’ sabre (5-4) and épée (5-4), as well as girls’ sabre (6-3), but both the boys’ and girls’ squads had enough wins in foil (both winning 7-2) and épée (girls winning 5-4) to pull out the overall team victories. Faren Roth, Hank Huhnke, Luke McNamara, and Brendan Balestracci each had 3-0 performances for Guilford.
