2016 Old Saybrook Rams Winter Year in Review

Old Saybrook boys’ track captured the Shoreline title for the second year in a row this winter with Lucas Sumby putting together a postseason to remember. The girls’ track team had a fine postseason in its own right, led by pole vaulter Katie Seegert. Also, Rams’ boys’ hoops saw a quality campaign that featured a few playoff victories.

Boys’ Indoor Track

The Rams’ boys’ indoor track squad defended its Shoreline Conference title by outscoring runner-up Haddam-Killingworth 144-138 at the conference championship meet.

Head Coach Pete Capezzone’s team was bolstered by a victory from senior captain Lucas Sumby in the 55 hurdles with a time of 8 seconds. Sumby went on to take first place in the pole vault (13-6) and 55 hurdles (7.77) at the Class S State Championship, where Old Saybrook placed fourth. Sumby followed that a first-place finish in the 55 hurdles at the State Open behind a time of 7.76 seconds. He finished fourth in the pole vault at the Open and then ran the hurdles again at the New England Championship. Sumby was a New Haven Register All-Area honoree.

Additionally claiming victory for Old Saybrook at the Shoreline meet were Austin Smith in the long jump (20-1) and pole vault (13-9), along with senior captain Carl Anderson in the shot put at 42-6.5. The Rams were further bolstered by victories from Mitch Bruehwiler, Austin Reynolds, Aaron Jang, and senior captain Dondre Swain in the 4x200 relay (1:36.79); as well as the 1,600 sprint medley relay of Bruehwiler, Reynolds, Quin Earles, and Eric Sultini (3:53.12). Swain also won the 55-meter dash in 6.82 for Head Coach Pete Capezzone’s club.

Girls’ Indoor Track

Old Saybrook recorded a second-place finish at the Shoreline Conference Championship, where senior captain Katie Seegert won the high jump by clearing 5 feet and also took top honors in the pole vault with a Shoreline Conference record height of 10 feet-7 inches.

The Rams also received first-place finishes in the 4x200 relay behind captain Hayley Broduer, Holly Coppes, Devyn King, and Vika Stoltz (1:51.09); in addition to the 4x800 relay of Jessica Stratton, Jael Givehand, Meghan Delaney, and Allison Bruehwiler (10:04.32). King also won the long jump at 16-1. Then at the Class S State Championship, Head Coach Pete Cappezzone’s club came in third place, led by victories from Seegert in the pole vault (10-6), Bruehwiler in the 600 (1:40.74), plus the 4x800 relay (10:03.62). Seegert went on to take second in the vault at the State Open and was selected for the New Haven Register’s All-Area Team.

Boys’ Basketball

Old Saybrook stormed out of the gates in 2016 to clinch a berth in the Shoreline Conference Tournament, as well as the Class S State Tournament, en route to a regular season record of 14-6.

In the Shoreline tourney, Vin Baker, Jr., hit a three-pointer with 2.5 seconds left to lift the Rams to a 60-59 victory over Hyde in a quarterfinal matchup. Old Saybrook then lost to Old Lyme in the semifinals. However, the Rams responded by winning their first two games in the State Tournament to advance to the quarterfinal round. Old Saybrook beat Morgan (67-53) and Amistad (63-47) before taking a 53-46 defeat to East Windsor in the quarterfinals to finish with an overall mark of 17-8.

Old Saybrook’s captains were seniors Owen Greene and Scott Cabral. The season marked Tim Arsenault’s final campaign as Old Saybrook’s head coach following a six-year tenure that included a record of 74-62.

Girls’ Basketball

The Rams finished the season with a record of 6-14, earning two wins against Hyde and one versus Old Lyme, Hale-Ray, North Branford, and Westbrook. Old Saybrook won its last two games of the year, including a 47-32 victory versus Westbrook on Senior Night.

Seniors Jill Murphy and Lizzie O’Brien were the senior captains for Head Coach Steve Woods’s squad. Marissa Newell was the team’s leading scorer at 10.5 points per game.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

Old Saybrook swimmers Mac Coppes and Will Brodeur competed in the Class S State Championship this year.

Coppes, a junior, placed fourth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.49 seconds to qualify for the State Open. Brodeur, a sophomore, came in 10th for the 50 free with a 23.49. In the 100 freestyle, Coppes finished fourth with a time of 49.99, while Brodeur placed sixth at 51.69.
